Hi Brett, I lead the Tutor/Mentor Connection, based in Chicago. I've been networking with IUPUI for past 8 years with goal of helping leadership strategies grow in Indianapolis who take ownership of strategies we've developed in Chicago which aim to engage business volunteers as tutors/mentors who help kids through school and into jobs/careers.
As an architect and athletic leader I think you might value the use of diagrams to show the "game plan" and long-term goal of helping kids starting first grade today be starting jobs/careers in 20 years.
We host a conference every six months in Chicago and that's how we met folks from IUPUI. The next is Nov. 19 and 20 and will be held at Northwestern University in Chicago. One workshop aims to draw athletes and get them to show ways they can use their visibility to get people involved, and keep people involved, in many places, for many years.
Our own tutor/mentor program is led by a former NU football player, and he uses his blog to write about teamwork, and team building. It illustrates how people with sports backgrounds could be recruited and trained to be principles, or leaders of non profits, in the same school neighborhoods.
