I am afraid to say that I am...a digital immigrant. Although I grew up in a time when technology was changing quickly, I was not immersed in the technological culture like my sister...whom is 7 years younger, was.
I am both encouraged and slightly worried by the videos that were posted. I am encouraged by the fact that students are more aware of their learning styles and needs. Not long ago, student learning was primarily between the teacher and the parent. I believe that greater access to information has created students whom are more aware. I am worried, simply because of the growing disconnect between students who are expressing a greater need for technological resources and the gross lack of resources at all levels of education.
I was absolutely blown-away by the anecdotal record by David Warlick. I yearn for a culture where that is the norm. I believe that other digital immigrants such as myself, yearn for the same. The best days in my classroom, usually revolve around some sort of technological event. I hope that as we grow, more schools will develop the technology to carry-out many of the described tasks.
Finally, as I reflect on the articles and the videos, I am very aware of the fact that districts are run by digital immigrants and are now serving digital natives. The disconnect will cause students to seek other avenues for information. My hope is that we can learn things in this class that will help us to help others speak more technological language.
