About Me
Emeritus Associate Professor Benavides is the Director of the Instructional Technology and Resource Center for the School of Education and Human Development and Director of the NASA Educator Resource Center. He is also faculty in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction. Professor Benavides represents Fresno State at the Academic Senate of the California State University. Otto is a member of various campus technology related committees and Chair of AIT- Academic Information Technology Committee. Before joining the faculty at CSU Fresno, Otto was an Assistant Professor at the College of Education at Memphis State University (The University of Memphis) where he was responsible for technology planning and implementation in the Center of Excellence in Teacher Education. He also taught audiovisual and other instructional technology courses at the undergraduate and graduate level. Prior to his employment at MSU, Otto Benavides worked at Shelby State Community College (Southwest State Community College) in Memphis, Tennessee. He was Assistant Director at the Instructional Media Center. As Assistant Director and Instructional Designer for Shelby State Community College he assisted faculty in several academic departments and in particular Allied Health fields with course and clinical space design. He also taught TV Production and audiovisual courses in the two year associate degree programs. Because of Otto's interest in international relations, he was asked to serve as International Student Advisor and representative to the Community College International Consortium.

Otto received a Community Service Award in Human Relation Efforts from the National Conference of Christians and Jews in 1988. He is Past President of the Memphis Council for International Visitors. Professor Benavides was recognized as an Apple Distinguished Educator in 1999. In April, 2000 he was honored as a Laureate by the Smithsonian Institution Computerworld Award Program. In 2009, Otto was selected as an Adobe Education Leader. Otto Benavides was a member of the Computer Educational Advisory Panel appointed by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing in 1997. He was a member of the State CTAP - California Technology Assistance Project - Staff Development Technology Proficiency Committee. Otto served on the Advisory Board of CLRN- the California Learning Resource Network and is Past President of the Board of Directors of AECT- the Association for Educational Communications and Technology International Division. Professor Benavides served as Chairman of the Steering Committee of the International Student Media Festival (ISMF). He also served on the Board of the ECT Foundation. Professor Benavides is Past President of ICEM - International Council for Educational Media, an organization based in Vienna, Austria.
