Cellphones and smartphones can offer parents a little more peace of mind when their children are at school. Parents know that in an emergency the student can contact them and vice versa. In addition, more and more cellphones and smartphones contain GPS devices that can be tracked if necessary. While, with the temptation of social media and texting in their hands, students may focus solely on their social life instead of the lesson plan.
Mobile devices are a dangerous tool that if used correctly can have excellent benefits in the classroom. I am an adult educator who works in the healthcare industry. I will have my students utilize their phones to look up relevant information during class in order to make quick assessments about a patient. It acts as a tiny computer with the internet in the palm of your hand. There are also apps for just about every subject. These apps can be a pain to install but might act as an additional resource for your students.
I do have students who end up texting or surfing the web for Powerball numbers but it is easy to pull them back by engaging them directly and asking them to solve something. Keep in mind that I work with adults, teenagers may prove more challenging to control in a large group.
surely if you can find some interactive apps or come up with games where students use viber or whatsapp to communicate and find together to solution to the assignments, I think it may be quite interesting..still as an ace writer who researched a lot into learning process, I'd say students easily get distracted and you as a teacher should always pay attention to what they are doing and if they are using phones in your class, they may not only use it for learning but for texting or browsing the web..I guess it may become really hard to control them at first but if you manage that, maybe you'll get some great results
best,
