I am a 5thg rade teacher and part of our social studies curriculum is to read Sign of the Beaver by ELizabeth George Speare. I don't think I like the way this book is depicting Native AMericans. I know I read it when I was younger, but the school I had been at did a lot of work on diveristy and how we treat other cultures and races. I feel like this book is perpetuating the sterio types at are out there already about Native Americans. I haven't read the book all the way through, but we are reading it as a whole class lit. circle. Just wondering if anyone else has read this book lately and what you think about it. Any feedback would be great! Thanks!

Check out this site. I was in a similar situation with the novel, Island of the Blur Dolphins.

I read "Morning Girl" and "The Birchbark House;" both were great stories.

Check out the "Books to Avoid" list. "Sign of the Beaver" is on it.
