Hello,
My husband and I are strongly considering leaving NYC to move to Toronto or Montreal. I have citizenship, and have taught high school for six years in my fair city.

My question is: are there high school teacher shortages in those cities? Who should I contact? Do I have to complete an application to those specific cities, or to the provinces?

Also -- I teach in a specialized school for gifted students. Are there similar public school programs available in those cities?

Thank you very much!
Pam

Thank you!

Hi Pam, don't know about Montreal, but in Toronto, I don't think there's a huge demand for teachers in general, but I'm probably not the best person to speak to that.
In order to teach in Ontario you will have to be certified by the Ontario College of Teachers. Check out this website: http://www.oct.ca/home.aspx?lang=e
Also, there are different school boards within each province, in Ontario, you usually apply to a school board. You should also check out http://www.applytoeducation.com/
As far as gifted programs, they fall under the area of special education, and there isn't as much funding as there used to be but they do exist.
Good luck!
If you are going to Ontario, apply to the Ontario College of Teachers now. They are not the fastest bureaucracy in the world, and it does take time for the paperwork to process.

As well, what would your qualifications be, in terms of subjects? In Ontario, you may get equivalency granted, but that would be after the fact of initial certfication. The demand for teachers tends to be subject specific, and not in general at this time.

I know in Quebec you are supposed to have your "Brevet D'Enseignement", though once granted I believe it is valid for life.
Hi Pam,
My understanding is that the teacher market in Ontario is pretty tight. People are coming to Calgary to find jobs here, and not necessarily in the teaching profession. Unfortunately, some have had to return to their home provinces because it's so expensive to live in Calgary. However, I think teachers are still in high demand in Alberta. Calgary is a great city. You need to be certified through Alberta Learning in order to teach in Alberta.
Good luck!
Thank you both.

I am a History teacher. I've also taught German. I suspect there are a lot of Social Studies teachers, and not a huge demand for German teachers. But, it's worth a try: I miss the old Canadian humility:)
These responses are very helpful.
Pam
If you've taught German, you may be interested in the German bilingual program. Check out both Edmonton and Calgary.
Cheers!
Elisa
I will, Elisa. I've always been an East Coast girl (I left Nova Scotia when I was 12). But, expanding those horizons could be fun. Just curious -- how many people live in the city?
About one million now and growing. There are a lot of East Coast transplants out here, too. :)
