I am on a quest to figure out how to make authentic learning in the classroom a success...
Does anyone have any stories of projects that they have introduced that they would consider to be authentic? I am also interested in how you assessed such projects!
Thanks for your help!

Here are several authenic projects that you can take a look at where 4-6th graders have become historians, archivists, researchers, and interviewers:
CSI: Cemetery Scene Investigation Students studied burial customs throughout the world as well as local history. Using digital cameras, video, GPS, handhelds the kids recorded the names/dates of people buried in several local cemeteries and presented that info to a larger online archive of cemeteries in our county.

Titanic in the Classroom We studies all aspects of the Titanic disaster and some students actually created 'new' information. As far as we could tell there was no record of the embarkation cities of the crew and the students collated that information. We also created one of the only 'searchable' databases of the passengers and crew.

Guardians of Freedom After a year long study of WWII students interviewed 54 WWII veterans. This will be the best work I've ever done as a teacher, it was life changing for all of us who were involved-- veterans and their families, students and their parents, teachers.

We also do 'authentic' blogging and we are doing Robotics, which is definately 'real work in a real work environment'. Let me know if you need more info
Hi there Julie - I have been using www.myhero.com for a few years now to introduce the students to heroes in their world. I also watched CNN, which had a wonderful special about "real life" heroes. So, we distinguish between what are heroes and celebrities, watch some of the short films on myhero.com (please make sure you pre watch videos, some are graphic or too mature for the students - or too much to explain). The students then go back to either site, choose a hero that is important to them, and they answer some questions. There is a great teacher section to the myhero.com site which will guide you with questions. One of my favorites. Hope this helps! :) Assessment would be a rubric, mostly following directions, and word processing formatting.
