Looking for a way to make a concept map with layers
I am looking for some ideas...I want to make up Learning Progression maps for each of the benchmarks for my state standards for planning purposes, working on adding in more formative assessments and utilizing more of the resources I have available by having one working document per benchmark. The idea I am working toward is something like what is attached.
My dream map would be built in layers so that I could publish or show only the layers that I want for different purposes (like turn off the assessments to share with kids, etc) BUT, I would still have one working document where everything is in one place and easy to access and make changes to. A long time ago, I worked with some drafting programs that worked with different layers, and it was so easy! I am pretty sure it must exist and that someone in this network will be able to help me out!

Would something like what you see at http://www.idiagram.com/CP/cpprocess.html be what you are talking about? Mouse over different portions and you will see the map change.
The tool that he uses is FLASH.

I was not sure if you have tried Inspiration yet. It is available as a 30 day free trial. Then there is a cost involved of around $70 for a single license.
I personally have not used it much in the classroom, but it is a fantastic tool. I believe it may be able to achieve the layers of information you require for your concept maps.

I signed up during the trial period for Webspiration, which worked in some ways, and not so much in others - I overlooked the trial period for Inspiration - maybe I'll have to give that one a shot too! I figured I might as well try several different things before I settle on what might fit my needs the best. Thanks!!

I like the trial Webspiration also, but it will no longer be free starting September. I did find https://bubbl.us/ which is free. It is easy to operate.
One more goodie is http://www.text2mindmap.com/. I picked this one up at my Stanford Summer Teacher Institute (meeting the needs of ELLs and those with special needs grades K-12). I will be blogging on this over the weekend and sharing what I was given there.
