There are a number of posts from individuals interested in using iPod Touches for teaching and Learning. At Culbreth Middle in Chapel Hill, NC we began a pilot this past August to place the iPod Touch in the hands of staff and students.

Our staff development for faculty to roll out the new technology centered on teacher coaches leading their groups in exploration through professional learning communities.

Our AVID students use the iPod Touch in the AVID classroom and in all other courses. They have piloted this program, using the iPod Touches daily for note taking, keeping individual agendas, translation for world languages, and accessing research through the Internet. In addition, our AVID students use many of the apps that teachers sync with these mobile devices. As student leaders, they’ve understood their responsibility to work and share this learning tool in collaborative groups.

This winter we were able to add iPod Touch labs for each of our seven interdisciplinary teams and two labs for our exploratory and resource teams. The interdisciplinary grade level iPod Touch labs are housed with each team and shared among the four content teachers (math, language arts, science, and social studies). These teachers plan together so that their students have access throughout each day. They access the internet as needed and use many apps as well.

Teacher current app favorites include: WordBook, Thesaurus, USA, Countries, Brain Tuner, Blanks, Whiteboard, CoinToss, Lose It!, Word Warp, FlipBook Lite. Of course they are using the included apps: Calendar, Calculator, Notes, Clock, YouTube throughout each day.

We held an iPod Touch Day last week with visitors from all over the state and from across the country. We even had a group from the UK come see our students and teachers in action with the iPod Touch. With almost 400 iPod Touches now in use at Culbreth, we’re happy to share what we’ve learned and what we’re learning.

For elementary users in particular here's a terrific blog from Jenny in Australia. She started with a project in her primary class using the iPod touches almost two years ago. She gives great evaluation info and then continues to provide additional info with other apps and work on her blog http://web.me.com/jenashby/iPodTouch_Project/Blog/Blog.html
Awesome! Thanks, Susan for the resources. My neices are living in Australia (from the US) for three years - it will be very nice to connect with teachers online and via blogs, etc to see how they are implementing tech in the elementary classrooms. By the way...my neices are LOVING their school and their learning experiences!!!
Glad to hear that your nieces are having fun.....wish we could get the Bretford Cart over here!!!!
Look up the Parasync cart, from Parat Solutions.

From a glance, it will achieve the same thing, although it does not solve the storage issue. Couple it with a decent case (such as a Pelican) and you would have a reasonable solution, although not 'all in one'.

Louise Duncan has just ordered one (or more?) for 2010
Thanks Deon..yes had been talking to Louise and Jonathan Nalder sent me some information on the parasync...looking forward to coming home on the 18th...ahh clean fresh air!
Yes, I have ordered one and it is due in before Christmas! I am looking forward to a fresh start with the Parasync docking station.
We have our new Parasync iPod docking station up and running, it's wonderful! Read about it here: http://louiseduncan.globalteacher.org.au/2009/12/18/parasync-ipod-d...
Nobody has mentioned theft yet. We did have one iPod come up 'missing'. After a little research I found Apple will not help us recover a stolen iPod by tracing the serial number on iTunes or anything logical like like. Amazon has a similar policy with their Kindle. Most companies are not in the crime fighting business, they instead believe in 'Finders Keepers, Losers Weepers'. Very discouraging:(

Great information! I have updated my wiki with some 'lessons learned' from a pilot ipod touch project I'm coordinating with a small district. The district has 5 schools. One classroom per school has received a classroom set of 30 8gig ipod touch (a Kindergarten room, a 2nd grade, a 4th grade, a 7th grade, and an 11th grade). Each classroom is an inclusion classroom (mixture of regular ed and special ed students). Here's the wiki if interested: http://ipodclassroom.wikispaces.com
