Need Some Math Support Sites for Mainstream Teachers of ESL Students

The algebra teachers at my school site have small numbers of ELLs in their classes, but the problem is not so much the language as it is the gap in their formal education in their home countries.  This often times leaves the math teacher scrambling to find ways to still teach a class of kids on grade level while trying to plug up the holes in the educational backgrounds of the ELLs who are lost.

Are there any websites out there that teachers could use with these kids during the instructional period that would allow the teachers to meet all the needs of their students more effectively than what is being done at present?

Here's hoping:)

Thanks.

Denise

When it comes to true understanding of a concept, the interactives on Illuminations are unparalleled. I would definitely check them out.

I'm not sure what grade-level you're looking for, but PBS's Cyberchase site has a TON of really good games that teach understanding. The site has a teacher page that lists summaries of all the games, as well as the national math standards that each game addresses.

Lastly, it might be a good idea to have other students create tutorial screencasts for the struggling students. The beauty of this is that the higher-level students gain a better understanding of the concept, and the struggling students can watch the tutorials as often as necessary (even as they complete a problem) to help them out. I recently wrote a blog post describing how teachers could make screencasts in their classrooms using FREE software -- it might help.

Good luck!
Thanks, Katy:)

The two teachers who had asked me for help here loved Illuminations!

Thanks, Katy! Illuminations was an answer to a prayer. Those two teachers I was trying to help found that it met their needs to a tee.

I review math interactive learning sites daily on my blog. Check out the math tag here http://bit.ly/bncfTV Enjoy!
Amanda, your blog is great! I will send it to the math department. For those non-techie teachers, I will pull out a few activities from your site to "motivate them" to try it.

Thanks again.
