Laptop Student Response System...

I have just started using 1 to 1 laptops in my classroom and have a question I am hoping someone out there can answer. Before laptops we were using clickers. It seems silly to me to hand out clickers to a bunch of kids who all have networked laptops. But I can't quite figure out what the functional equivalent would be.

I currently use edu20.org and there doesn't seem to be anything like clickers there. I also realize I could use one of the survey websites, but that's still not quite the same...I have also thought of instant messangers...and I think that could be the closest match...but I am wondering if there is anything else?

Thank you for this idea. I wonder what they charge for that? I know I probably wouldn't have the budget for it this year, but maybe next year. I do, in fact, have an interwrite board in my classroom already, so it would go hand in hand.

Another person wrote to me privately and suggested using a google form...and for some things, that would work, but not in every case.

What about the polling features of Edmodo or CoverItLive? Neither of these allow for specific user response tracking, however.

Hey Ed,

There is another program sold by eInstruction. It is also a web based student response program.

I've been researching "Lecture Capture" software for recording college lessons. I'll look around for some other "clicker" applications that may be inexpensive.

I would definitely recommend PollEverywhere -- with the free account, you can create as many polls as you want (multiple choice and open-ended response) for up to 32 students. Students can reply by navigating to a specific url. Results are displayed in a graph instantly.

With 1:1 wifi, you can do a lot with student response. Aside from just polling, you could use something like Twitter or Wiffiti to promote discussion. (If you're interested, I wrote a little about free technologies like this in a blog post -- it's about using cell phones in education, but with 1:1 laptops, you can utilize a lot of the same features.)

SMART do a version of the clickers called SMART Response CE. If you are used to, and familiar with the Notebook software, then that might be just what you are looking for. Here is some more info:

You can also use Twitter for this. That has worked for me. If it is unblocked in your school, it can be very handy. I just set up a powerpoint slide that pulls twitter info in with a hashtag or I use the PollEverywhere. The powerpoint can also work as a tweet feed so you can see questions or comments that students post to.
