Make-Up DQ #2
After completing the novel, Their Eyes Watching God, by Zora Neal Hurston, we have identified the use of many literary elements throughout the journey of Janie Starks. Hurston's choice of dialogue in itself was a challenging part of the novel as well, but helped in comprehension of the overall setting and characters analysis.
In a well thought response, discuss how the dialogue used, diction, irony and symbolism all worked together to drive the plot of the novel.

Florida was the overall setting of Thier Eyes Were Watching God. The irony of the story was Logan Killicks and Joe Starks. Although Their Eyes Were Watching God deals with Janie’s relationships with other people, it is first and foremost a story of Janie’s search for spirtual sign and a strong sense of her own identity. Tea Cake functions as the catalyst that helps drive Janie toward her goals. Like all of the other men in Janie’s life, he plays only a supporting role. Jody’s character is opposite that of Tea Cake. He is cruel, conceited, and boring in Janie as a person. But his cruelty is not a result of any specific excitment toward Janie. This is the overall setting and characters analysis.

I disagree, yes Janie was looking for her own identity but, she already had spitual guidance. She had always relied on God, that is why she love sitting under the tree and swimming in the river. Doing these activities she would always feel spiritually with him. Her main goal was to find love, she sometimes let lust overshadow her identity and she was okay with it.

the choice of words that Hurston use first show that the is old. It also show that there are alot of shifts in the story, you can tell because of the tone that she keeps thoughout the entier book. The type of tone that she keeps whtith when she is with jody is paraniod. Its like she is scared to do things that she wants to do because she is scared of what jody's reaction is going to be. Jody's choice of words some times frieghten janie and this ties back into her being paraniod.

I disagree Janie was never paranoid while being with Jody she was only tired and depress. He belittled her everytime she couldn't do what she wanted, but what he told her to do.

Janie made a mistake by kissing Johnny Taylor which made her grow up too soon. Eventually she was searching freedom. Not knowing that the greatest thing that happened to her would be the last thing. Janie had to persisent all the way to the end. Persisent means to endure. While living with Logan she was envious to find success.Envious means wanting to have somebody’s else’s success, good fortune, qualities, or possessions. The irony of Their Eyes Were Watching God is Tea Cake who made Janie realized its time to stop being serious & have fun. If Joe Starks wasn't so mean to Janie, she would still probably be still with him.

The dialogue used in "Their Eyes Watching God" was used to inform the reader about the time period or era the story occured. Hurston uses slang or abbrevation to present the idea of the characters are from the country or the hood. She uses metaphors such as; "Now, women forget all those things they don't want to remember, and remember everything they don't want to forget. The dream is the truth. Then they act and do things accordingly." She uses this to compare a womens dreams to mens dreams which never seems to go away, compared to a womens dream which seem to fade away in time. This story has many ironies, such as; Janie exscaping from Logan Killicks to Joe "Jody" Starks only to be in a worst situation than before. Janie left Logan looking for love in Jody, which she ends up never really finding the love she yearned for. Hurston uses "Mules and other brutes had occupied their skins." Symbolizing the porch sitters position on the porch as always in other people business.

In Their Eyes Were Watching God their was alot of constant dialogue. I think this is because Janiie came in contact with so many different people and this helped show why she was trying to test her chance at freedom and love. Zora Neal Hurston used symbolism such as nature and the peach tree. She sees that nature is beautiful and she wishes that the world could be the same, beautiful and full of freedom.
