I just found out about Edmodo and want to learn of any applications 4-8 grade teachers have put in place using this program.  I like that students need the instructor's pass key to access the site and that information can be sent directly to students' cell phones.

I use Edmodo to post assignments and links to websties. Also, I allow students to post their homework/assignments/projects. It workds vry well for me. I am also looking for new ways to use edmodo.
I use Edmodo as an online discussion board with my high school English classes. I set them up is small groups and post a prompt. Each student replies to the prompt my sending his/her response to the group. Each student is responsible for one primary post to the group and two responses to group members. I write prompts that require thoughtful reflection and are well supported with properly embedded text evidence. I modeled the first one for them by writing a post I would consider excellent.
I use Edmodo to post assignments, links, receive student work, and for discussion purposes. I love it, BUT, a collegue read the Terms and Service Agreement and got me a little concerned. So, two questions: 1: Have you read it? and 2: Is there a reason to be concerned? Specifically, the idea that anything that you or your students post can be used by edmodo. Is this okay with you?
Thanks for the info, Mark. I have not read the terms. I am not concerned about others reading my students' work or my postings. If I see something sketchy, which I have not, I can delete it.

I wasn't and am not particularly concerned either. I think what bothered my colleague most was not the viewing of the posts, but the use of what you post...whether it is text or files. I don't mind if other educators use my materials for their classrooms, but I am not sure that this is that the agreement is saying. Below is the excerpt from the email:

"In the course of using the Services, you and other users may provide information which may be used by Company in connection with the Services and which may be visible to certain other users. Does that mean that Edmodo can take any posts from any of the users and use them at their discretion? If so, does this concern you at all?"
Yes, I certainly see the issue. I believe that many of our free services take such liberties. If it's that much of a concern, I would suggest using Moodle. Thanks for sharing this information.

This is interesting I did not know this existed.

Hi, we've used Edmodo before with 5th graders during a character study unit. Students used Edmodo to chat about the characters of a book and pushed their thinking as they dialogued about them with other 5th grade classes in the same school. Conversations were there afterwards for the teacher to check.
Thanks for all the great replies. I particularly like the idea of using Edmodo with the entire school for the same grade to work on the same project. Students can reach outside their idividual classroom for ideas and direction all the while teachers can collaborate and have the opportunity to discuss the input and understanding of a larger group of students. Students should be made aware of their boundaries s far as the privacy and rights issue is concerned - it is just the risk one takes when using a free service.

Do you have to approve the conversations first before they were published to the website?

I guess I am like really late with this but I JUST found out about EDMODO and it's amazing.  I hope I can get this up and running soon.

I think that Edmodo is great. Your students can not only interact with you and the content but they can also interact with one another which helps with difficult concepts. They are able to talk about a book for example. They can discuss themes, symbolism, etc. Yes, you should go back and make sure no one gets on the wrong track but, I think it is a wonderful study tool.
