Are iPads and tablets just expensive toys for rich kids?

I read the article you posted and I feel my school did the same thing. When I began teaching, we had desktop computers for our (teacher) use and for students to use. Then the school bought laptop carts for the students and laptops for all of the teachers. The school wanted to phase out the desktops and have the teachers use only the laptops. Now the laptops are older and a lot of them are breaking. We are now phasing out the laptops and are back to desktops. In addition, the school bought ipads for every teacher and ipad carts for each department to use with their classes. I love have all of the technology as long as we get the proper training to use it. I agree with the article in that teachers still need a computer in addition to the ipads. Ipads can only do so much. My goal for this school year is to learn more about how to use the ipads in the classroom with my students. Many of the teachers I work with feel that we are jumping on the new technology so fast, but not getting ample training opportunities on how to utilize all of it. We are not complaining about having the technology - we know we are so fortunate to have it.
