I just learned that I will be teaching a class with three different levels of English in it: beginners, intermediates, advanced. The workshop I attended at the district office offered information on learning centers, but how does a high school teacher do centers with so many students? I wish they had offered practical suggestions from colleagues who teach in grades 6-12, but that never seems to happen. I don't want to just hand out worksheets to two groups while I work with the other.

Any practical advice you can offer would be much appreciated.

Denise

www.ellteacherpros.com
www.teachingsuccesseswithells.blogspot.com
Integrating Technology in Social Studiestag:www.classroom20.com,2010-08-19:649749:Topic:4988642010-08-19T17:03:49.379ZJulie Lolandhttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/JulieLoland
I am a grade three teacher in Abbotsford, BC, Canada and am new to this site and posting questions in forums. I would like to begin integrating more technology in my classroom, specifically in my Social Studies unit on Communities. I think I was considered due to my expertise with internet instruction and ELD/ESL instruction at the high school level (including coaching new teachers) and university (ELD methodology at National Hispanic University) levels.

I went on such a trip 3 years ago to China and the memories of the trip are still as fresh in my mind as if it had been yesterday. I received no support at that time though I was allowed to go. I thought I could access my personal time, but my request was turned down. Meanwhile, on my trip I met delegates from all grade levels whose districts were thrilled and sent them off with support ranging from sub time to partial financial support.

Now, the question is this time will my district see it through my eyes as an honor to have been selected? How should I approach them on this one? Any ideas? How do I make the powers that be see that this is not a "vacation"? If you have been on like excursions, how did you convince administrators that it was in their best interest to let you go?

Thanks.

Denise

www.ellteacherpros.com
www.teachingsuccesseswithells.blogspot.com
Would you share any of your tricks to getting kids excited about writing in class?tag:www.classroom20.com,2010-03-24:649749:Topic:4530812010-03-24T01:00:11.642ZDenise Stewarthttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/DeniseStewart
The year is winding down and kids are getting antsy (they are high school ELLs):) I want to try some different writing activities that will motivate them a bit more to write. In ELD, I teach math, science, English, history, and government. To be honest, they do everything I ask, but I want to find some different techniques that will re-ignite the enthusiasm they displayed on day one (maybe not totally realistic BUT it is worth a shot). I am an instructional coach for high school content teachers with ELLs in their classes. Though I am a peer, some teachers are not open to making adjustments in their instructional styles no matter what I suggest (passive resistance so to speak). These same teachers have struggling ELLs and low CST scores and redesignation rates for the ELLs in their classes. They are highly experienced, but don't see a problem. I share my successes/failures/insights, etc., but meet a "weak response." I…

Greetings, colleagues:
I am giving a workshop for our city in February for Secondary Social Studies teachers over Web 2.0 websites that can be used in Social Studies. Since I am an elementary teacher, do any of you have a favorite Social Studies site that you have found to be useful in your classroom?
