Hi.

I am currently a trainee teacher hired as a music specialist teaching BTEC Music Technology as well as Performance and Composition.

The groups are small, (approximately 8 students) working in a small studio with one workstation and two live rooms attached.

Depending on the sessions aims I split the groups into pairs as: techs, engineers, producers, and performers and I rotate them regularly to keep from anyone sitting idle for too long and to ensure they all get to experience everything.

As much as the lessons are going well, with only one workstation I cannot help but feel I could possibly be doing more to keep the students engaged for more of the lesson.

If anyone has any tried and tested ideas/techniques for keeping students busy in this sort of situation I would love to hear your suggestions.

Thanks

It may sound ridiculous (and we suppose it is to some extent), but students have long been putting information to music and using it as learning tool. In fact, we know of one medical student who starting writing anatomy and physiology songs so that he could pass his exams. Included in his oeuvre are crowd-pleasers like “Integumentary System, How Do You Do It?” and “If I were a Skeletal Muscle Tissue.” Let’s get to the point though:

We’d like to introduce Flocabulary, an online learning platform that delivers educational hip-hop songs and videos to students in grades K-12. Flocabulary has been around for a little over a decade and boasts a weekly audience of 5 million students. Their mission: “To motivate kids and help them reach their full academic potential, not only by raising test scores but by fostering a love of learning in every child.”

Flocabulary’s database of songs covers anything from the discovery of America and the Bill of Rights to the scientific method, grammar and Mark Twain.

You’re free to try Flocabulary at no cost for 14 days. Thereafter, you can choose from three plans:

Flocabulary: ($5/month) Access to hundreds of original songs & videos in all major K-12 Subject Areas and standards-aligned lessons for each song

Week in Rap: ($5/month) Every Friday you’ll receive the week’s biggest stories in a rap music video

Flocabulary + The Week in Rap: ($7/month)

Here’s a sample of what they have to offer:

If your students are anything like ours, they love it when technology is integrated into the classroom. To help you do this, we’ve put together a resource that offers 50 of our favorite teacher-friendly websites and apps. Our descriptions of each resource are brief and lighthearted—and hopefully, substantive enough to give you a sense for whether or not they will fit your students’ and your needs.
Don't have apple products so can't evaluate Voice Band. The app is still cheaper than Songsmith ($29.99) vs. $2.99 + .99 for additional instruments (Itune). Read about some problems with app on IPod but Iphone seems to be fine. What I love about both products is that you can sing and it creates music as you sing or hum beats. In Audacity I would have create my own music or edit others. We also play around with Jamstudio, but have not done much with it. This app creates music as one sings a song. Love it. Watch video on Songsmith and Voice Band. Students in my media classes are working on beats and this could transform their beats in great songs for our library fast.
Music Technology workshoptag:www.classroom20.com,2010-09-15:649749:Topic:5090262010-09-15T13:51:05.689ZJillhttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/JillSayers

Zane Education ( www.ZaneEducation.com ) has in the last 6 days launched the first on-demand online K12 educational video subscription website.

The site is currently free to use until December 1st while bug testing is completed and the subscription system is implemented.

The purpose of the website and our online videos is to provide teachers (and homeschoolers) with an alternative to having to spend hours searching YouTube for videos they can possibly use in the classroom and in the home

Zane has spent the last 4 years converting their library of 250 K12 educational CD-ROMs into approximately 1000 Flash-based online videos, all of which are now available on the www.ZaneEducation.com website.

The online videos include 250 curriculum topics and subjects include Art, Music, Literature, History, Geography, Science, Biology, Library Skills, Health and Social Sciences. Each topic is accompanied by online testing facilities in the form of interactive quizzes. This enables the student to watch the video and then test themselves on what they have learned.

A key feature of our educational videos is that they are subtitled giving the student the option to either listen to the presentation, or watch it on-screen. This enables them to also cater for the requirements of special needs students, students suffering from reading disabilities and sight impairments, as well as students learning English as a second language.

And so why am I making this posting here?

Well I would much appreciate some comments or feedback on the following questions:

1. How useful a resource are online videos for teachers in the classroom?

2. How many people are aware of the recent research carried out by the Availll Foundation (www.availll.com ) that appears to demonstrate the potential that subtitled videos have for increasing the reading literacy age level of the student using them as a learning tool? (Their research appears to indicate that subtitled video has the potential to improve the reading literacy age of a student by as much as 12 months in 12 weeks.)

3. What percentage of teachers are having to resort to spending their own time searching YouTube for videos that may be suitable to use in class?

4. If our video content was made available for other uses in the K12, in what ways could it be deployed to help improve what is available to teachers and homeschoolers?

5. In what other ways could our K12 videos be deployed to help improve the standard of K12 education? Web 2.0 in the Creative Artstag:www.classroom20.com,2009-10-20:649749:Topic:3941842009-10-20T05:04:15.898ZChris McKenziehttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/ChrisMcKenzie

As a user of web 2.0 in my English classes, I have now have the role of assisting my school's Creative Arts department with the integration of technology in the classroom. However, since I have never taught any of the creative arts, what I know of the courses is gathered through discussions with the teachers and observations of their classes. I was wondering if anyone here teaches any creative arts courses and could offer suggestions of how to integrate IT and / or web 2.0. Because of the nature of the courses, IT seems to be used less often, so it's difficult to find any helpful materials.
The Creative Arts department consists of Foods, Textiles, Visual Arts, Drama, Orchestra, and Choir. Our school uses tablets with OneNote, and we use Moodle; however, I'd love to hear about any other ideas too. What I've come up with so far is using OneNote in Foods to create and share recipe cards, recording and / or podcasting student progress in the Orchestra and Choir, and using OneNote to analyse artwork in the Visual Arts class. The textiles teacher wants to have the students create fashion portfolios and to come up with fashion design ideas, so I've suggested using OneNote for that. The Visual Arts teacher is using Diigo as a replacement for an information gathering assignment that used to involve cue cards.
