Short Session Description (one line): A Discussion of Follett Software's Aspen SI and Curriculum and Learning functionality.

Full Session Description (as long as you would like): In this session we'll be talking about Student Information Systems and how they are evolving into time-saving classroom tools that can help teachers and administrators in just about everything they do. While most districts have a SIS these days that includes a gradebook, but most educators use them to track and report data and alignments to standards. However, today's educators use them to track and report data and align assignments to standards. However, today's educators need more from their Student Information Systems and some new programs, like Follett's Aspen, can help them save time and create a better learning experience for students.

Hi all,

Our district has put forth a great initiative where if a teacher signs up for training this summer and continues to participate in group work/share outs through out the year, they receive a Smartboard for their classroom. Great, right? We had a mass response, 114 teachers. Now, it is our job to provide this training. We will be doing 2 seperate sessions, one K-5, the other 7-12. We have an even 57 people per group. We will have them for 2 days, 10 hours total. We don't want this…

Great, right? We had a mass response, 114 teachers. Now, it is our job to provide this training. We will be doing 2 seperate sessions, one K-5, the other 7-12. We have an even 57 people per group. We will have them for 2 days, 10 hours total. We don't want this to be a "tool" lesson, rather a bigger technology initiative. We are basing it on lesson planning with technology more than "smart" training. The smartboard is merely the delivery method. There are 4 of us doing the initial planning and will have other experienced smartboard users available for break out sessions throughout the 2 days.

I'm looking for suggestions from this great group of educators as to what you would be sure teachers knew walking into the first day of school with this equipment mounted in the room. We already have a list, but I'm curious to see how it matches up with what you all suggest here. Looking more for techniques, rather than how to orient, what each tool in Notebook Software does etc...Let me have it!
I feel like "getting" information (via RSS) is only the first step towards making a lasting change. A logical second step is providing an avenue for educators to discuss/share what they're reading. This is where Ning comes in to play. I have setup a Ning for the staff to use to share resources, discuss ideas, etc. With this "setup" in mind, I have a few questions for the Classroom 2.0 community:

1) Has anyone else tried this sort of approach? If so, how has it been going so far? We're off to a slow start as far as "sharing" goes...I'm guessing this is pretty typical.

2) What do you see as the pros/cons of using Ning as a collaboration tool? (We had tried wikispaces previously, but it was not very user-friendly for the discussions we were looking to take place). What type of changes would you make to Ning if you were able to do so? In other words, what features seem to be missing from Ning that you wish you had...or that discouraged you from using it in the first place? In the past I have shown workshop participants how to use the websites Gabcast as well as VoiceThread, but these workshops were the first ones where I've focused almost exclusively on those tools. I created a VoiceThread of reflections on the conference in a whole-class format, after teacher-participants used their cell phones during the workshop to record their reflections to the website Gabcast.
I'm interested to know if other teachers have used Gabcast successfully for digital storytelling projects, including VoiceThread? We've had one digital story in our "Celebrate Oklahoma Voices" digital storytelling project use Gabcast for an interview with a grandparent ("The Dirty Thirties") and another which used GCast ("The Story of Richard Ivie"). I'd really like to know about more examples of these types of cell-phone powered digital storytelling projects, as well as about the experiences others have had.

In creating this VoiceThread, I first added the photos. I then downloaded all the participant comments from Gabcast. In all during both workshops, we had 28 different recorded audio reflections. Only one of these was a repeat, as far as I know. The reflections were uploaded on slides one and three of the VoiceThread. The first time I uploaded them, for some reason I was not presented with the VoiceThread trash can icon to delete individual uploads. I deleted the entire slide and started it over again, and the second time the trash can was present as it should have been. That seemed to be a strange bug.

I encouraged teachers to not break the cell phone use policies at their schools: If their schools banned cell phone use at school, they could use this as a homework assignment for students. I think this process of using Gabcast takes quite a few "clicks" for teachers who are brand new to digital storytelling or consider themselves not to be very technology literate, but overall I think the process is relatively straightforward.
