We’re always looking for reading strategies for struggling readers, so we were happy to come across a video made by author Jim Trelease called How to Read a Book You Don’t Want to Read.

Trelease’s video was inspired by, of all things, watching tree surgeons cut down a leaning, 80-foot pine tree that threatened his house. The process used by the tree “surgeons,” in a strange way, reminded him of having to read books we don’t want to read. The end result was not only one less leaning pine tree, but also a nine-minute video that may help your reluctant readers. Check it out and let us know what you think.

Use discussion boards to promote collaboration and critical thinking as an alternative format

Full Session Description (as long as you would like):

The ability to communicate in writing is a key skill. There are various ways to promote writing, from requiring frequent in class writings to a research paper. This instructor uses online discussion board assignments to encourage collaboration and discussion in response to scenarios or questions about the readings. Students are required to post individual responses to the questions and to also work together to create a final group report based on their responses. The instructor can easily determine whether and how each individual student participated and can also evaluate group collaboration dynamics. In addition, when students are required to post a final report that summarizes their discussion, that reinforces what they learned. Finally, when students post that report for the entire class to read, other students can learn from that report. This has been an effective way to encourage collaboration, encourage critical thinking and promote good writing and research.

I would like to present a differentiation model using mini video lessons as the scaffold. In this model the specific class is Algebra. The class has many different levels of algebra student as it is the base level course for our high school. As the year progressed I realized that my students needed a different type of instruction than traditional lecture. I tried a variety of approaches, but the differentiated approach has had the most success. In order to implement this I used my iPad and the showme app (free!) to create mini videos. I then downloaded a copy of each video and posted them to YouTube ( makes the videos playable on the most number of platforms). I used my website to list the video concepts in each section. A typical class now looks like this: Each student is watching a video that teaches the concept, on a computer or itouch. The student then does some practice problems on the concept and checks their answers. The teacher coaches them in the practice problems and/or puts them into small groups to work through difficulties. Once the students are confident they take a short concept quiz(no points), when they have completed all the concepts in the section they take a graded quiz. When the students have completed all the minimum sections they have the option to do extra sections that are weighted. Finally each student is given a unit test on the minimum sections.

The session I would like to teach would walk an instructor through the process of creating these videos, and how to make a website to host them.

Our team has been exploring many alternative devices to be used in the classroom. Besides the iPad, we have also investigated the Google Chromebook.

What I am looking for (with my Mac) is voice to text software that I can use to write stories with. I plan to write short stories, novels and screenplays. I need advice on what to use. I am not computer savvy (I didn't know my mac had text edit until someone showed me). So, I am not real sound with how to do stuff and need pretty basic answers. Is there any free software that can be used? Since I am disabled, I can't work anymore and only get SSD right now (until 65, then my pensions kick in, but that's a long time away).

I refuse to just give up on my dream. Just because my body is breaking down doesn't mean my mind has to. So, this is very important to me. Any software you tell me to use would have to be able to handle standard creative writing needs. Dialog, paragraphs etc. I know screenwriting might just be a template speciality, so, I will have to see if the writing program you have me look into can handle templates, but, one problem at a time. I have a lot of great ideas and with technology so great now, I am hoping that what is in my head might be able to be read or seen (in the case of movies) by others.

thank u all in advance for any help. I know everyone is busy. It is really appreciated.
