You may be teaching younger students or preparing high schoolers for the SAT. One thing’s for sure: Regardless of whom you are teaching vocabulary building is an essential part of every teacher's job! And if we do it right, we can help students foster an appreciation for the importance of lifelong vocabulary development. These five vocabulary building apps are a wonderful way to bring technology, engaged learning, and just plain fun into you classroom on a regular basis.

Honorificabil—huh?: 5 Vocabulary-Building Apps

ProfessorWord
This is a great tool for students of any age and stage of language development. Download ProfessorWord on your classroom computer(s); run it whenever you bring up a website on the classroom projector and voila! Any time you run across a vocabulary word students don't understand, simply click on the word and view the definition.

Lingro
This program is a fantastic ESL tool for native Spanish speakers or native English speakers learning Spanish. Access the Lingro website, type in the URL you want to visit, and Lingro will make every word on that site "clickable," allowing students access to instant Spanish translations. Students can collaborate, look back at recent words, and more.

Brain Blaze Root Words
Understanding root words is one of the most powerful tools a student can hone to suss out the meanings of unfamiliar words. Brain Blaze Word Roots Flashcards is an interactive app for students to test their root word knowledge solo, in pairs, or in groups. We can see a multitude of classroom game possibilities too.

Word Root of the Day
While we're on the subject of root words, we love this site that would provide a great way to start the day in any English class. Word Root of the Day is one of the most visually attractive, informative, interactive, and interesting platforms to see how roots help "grow" our words. Your students will look forward to each day's new root.

MindSnacks SAT Vocab
This app wasn't called one of the Best Learning Apps of 2011 for nothin’. Did you ever think the words "Fun" and "SAT Vocabulary building" could go together? We didn't either until we found the SAT Vocab - Mindsnacks app. Your students will get addicted—and this is one technology addiction we can fully support.

Try these new apps out on your students and see what they think. We suspect that your vocabulary building lesson plans will be even more effective when you use engaging tools your students can use both at school and at home.

Hello everyone. I am brand new to Classroom 2.0 and am seeking advice on how to find resources for my new high school reading class. Our high school has grades 9-12 and about 240 students. I teach English I & III and Yearbook Journalism. We start school next week. The reading class will have about 25 kids, all of whom failed their 8th grade reading test or the high school STAR reading test.
Basically, I will have the freshmen twice a day and would have had the upperclassmen when they were freshmen.

Based on what I've researched online or asked around, I have come up with this possible weekly structure for this class:

Mon. -- add cross curriculum "core vocab" to the kids' vocab journals and use interactive games on the Promethean Board to practice the vocab

Tues. -- apply reading strategies to short texts [context clues, inference, main ideas/details, author's purpose]

Wed. -- go to the computer lab to search online for articles of interest, blog about certain books, practice for the reading test via PASSKEY program that our school has

Thurs. -- practice writing strategies in cooperative learning groups

Fri. -- practice fluency with a partner, do silent reading, add difficult words under "My Words" in vocab journals

So what I am needing is a source for vocab games, age-appropriate short texts (different from what we will be reading in my English I class), potential websites, blogs, and age-appropriate materials for fluency practice. Seems like everything I find is for elementary kids and maybe up to 8th graders.
Do you have a Great Vocabulary Site?tag:www.classroom20.com,2011-05-22:649749:Topic:6387772011-05-22T23:09:50.744ZErin Kleinhttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/ErinKlein

I have had some colleagues wondering about the ability to create customized vocabulary online or IWB games? The customization they were looking for was to be able to insert their own definitions. We do like Spelling City for spelling and vocab games with our own words, but they do not let us put in our own definitions. Any leads??

I am working on a project and am trying to decide if the term cyberlearning involves just networked learning with a computer, or if it includes other technologies such as simulations. Your thoughts would be much appreciated.
I'm a high school technology teacher in the inner city. So far, we've been focusing on projects, creating some great products with Office, SketchUp, Google Earth, etc. More and more, though, I'm realizing that my students haven't had the benefit of growing up with computers at home, like many of their more affluent peers.
I would be grateful to anyone who could pass along resources, PowerPoints, etc. that deal with these crucial elements.
