I am teaching a poetry unit to my seventh graders and to keep them engaged and interested we are using song lyrics as poems and identifying figurative language and poetic devices within them. I want to make this interesting for them and integrate technology in some way. They will be writing their own poems this week and what I would like to do is have them take the poems and match them to music and make songs in a sense.

Has anyone ever done these. Can you recommend any resources to accomplish this?

I am a high school music teacher. And in my electronic music class we have a project where the students find a nursery rhyme and put music to it. We do this using garage band. Nursery rhymes are easy because of the rhythmic feel to them. Then we move on to more lengthy compositions.
Reading their poems with music would be easy to do as a podcast using Audacity but be sure you're using public domain music. They could also make videos by taking pictures of the words in their poems. Animoto is offering full access to educators HERE Sounds like a project the kids would enjoy.
