Google Apps templates??

How are folks dealing with distributing templates to students under Google Apps? There does not appear to be a way to save as a template. I cannot imagine trying to get students to save a new copy reliably (so as not to corrupt/edit the shared original that everyone else has).

This would seem to be one of the most basic needs for educational use, so I am hoping that I am just missing something!
