This sounds great and I'll be keen to give it a go as well! After reading all the posts I think I have some ideas of how I could incorporate it into my lessons. Thanks!

I'm fortunate to be in a 1:1 school; all of our students 9-12 have laptops. Our 7-8 grade have carts. It has been very easy to demonstrate examples from my desktop on the LCD projector and have my students follow the steps to learn new applications. Mind Node is another application we use, but without the collaboration feature. Two years ago I had just 10 computers in my English classroom and we had to rotate days or work in pairs. Thanks for the tip - I'd not heard of this and am anxious to try it with my seniors and sophs. My sophs have been game for anything new this year; the seniors less so. I'll start with them; at that age organization is always an issue. *Terri*

One thing I noticed is that accounts can be setup using the same email address, and that you look for bubbl.us friends by email address. An elementary teacher could use this to their advantage in a couple of ways.

1. The teacher could set up a generic gmail or yahoo email address and require that all student accounts use this email address, which would really cut down on the headache of managing of bunch of emails, getting kids an email account, etc.
This sounds gr8 but I wondered how you actually linked the students' and your networks - I don't understand that process.

Hi Ginger,

What a beautiful turnaround for your 2 strugglers! Thanks for your post.

For debate preparation, I'm considering using debategraph. (http://debategraph.org/) It provides the tools that will allow students to sort their bubble maps more logically into the structure of a debate by creating a tree structure that identifies the relationships between an issue, a position and counter position on the issue, and the supporting evidence for each.
I haven't used it yet, but I plan to teach the students to map their brainstorms first in an unstructured FreeMind (open-source mind map similar to Bubble.US without the collaboration piece) and then use debategraph as way to explicitly map the relationships present in their FreeMind map.

BTW: Debategraph is free, has great examples (a bit complex though) and allows students to collaborate. I have a simple question whic…tag:www.classroom20.com,2008-07-21:649749:Comment:1661132008-07-21T13:20:51.917ZVee Paisiehttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/VeePaisie
I have a simple question which I hope many of you might reply. How do you carry off all of this in your classroom? Or are you in a computer lab? My situation: 30+ students and 2 desktops. OR laptops on carts with a battery life that prevents all my seventh graders from doing the activity the same day. Just how many computers are you folks averaging in your rooms?

Good stuff, Ben & Dave. Thanks for sharing examples and ideas for ways to use these tools with students. While Mindmeister does not offer the cool special effects, the added layer of "extras" for notes, links, etc. can help students take idea development to the next level (like Inspiration).
