Hello Eric - I am a classroom teacher who uses several authentic project-based assessments and also I have my students do written essays in support of our school's literacy initiative. At my school so many of us have been doing project-based assessments that our guidance supervisor has observed and stated that the students have become less and less well prepared for taking large objective tests. In PA the PSSA has become such an important report card for schools that we are being pressured to do whatever we can to get them to test better. My thought is that we need to be careful to maintain a balance. I do recommend that teachers develop rubrics for projects that that very closely resemble the rubrics that are used on any state tests. All project-based learning needs to include a written piece that has a well developed rubric. Good luck.<br />
