I still don't understand how it could be used in a History classroom...

I'm very interested in this, but have yet to see how it can be used in the History classroom, and I've done youtube searches. I understand it's great to have virtual meeting places. Can you recreate historical places?

I'm new at this too. I really don't understand all of the benefits.
You can create historical places. There is ancient Rome, for example. I am also a history teacher, and I thought it would be great to use to have the students create their own "country," complete with a constitution, laws, and (elected?) leaders. It really could be a great, albeit time consuming, simulation to teach students principals of government and society.
That sounds great. How much time did you have to devote to this project? Which program did you use?
