You can hear the sympathy in all the words written here....we have all been there and know the frustrations you have dealt with (at least to some degree). My mantra is "it is for the kids" and that, at times, will help. I have just download your Scope and Sequence as a resource to use for our own curriculum writing over the next 6 months.
I couldn't agree with you more when it comes to admin. For the most part so few of them have a grasp of what effective tech integration is, and to think they are the ones doing the evals of teachers! This may sound a bit judgmental - please understand I am not finding fault with the people, but the system.

Hang in there and hope to see you back in the education field....
yes I've been setting that up...sadly very few schools even want to hear about where they are weak. It's all CYA out there. And half the time the people on Boards of Education don't know any better either.

Well I walked out a month ago and took a job for much less money working at a supermarket. I had had enough. When an idjit admin requests a FIFTH rewrite of the IT curriculum because she does not know what she wants, you just pack up your laptop and leave the playground. I don't plan to go back to IT education unless I find a school already in the thick of netbooking the campus or using smartphones or something to allow the kids to get their work done. Thanks for all your kind words on here.…

My article on "Computer Science not just for big kids' has been published in the current (November 2009) issue of ISTE's Learning and Leading with Technology periodical. It touches on the value of, and curricular ideas for, exposing upper elementary and middle school kids to 3 aspects of computer science -algorithmic thinking, boolean logic and data structures/databases.

I think it has some useful ideas for high school teachers too.
For those who cannot not get a hold of the article (it happens to be a members-only article online), I have reprinted it on SmartBean with ISTE's permission - http://www.thesmartbean.com/magazine/home-schooling/expanding-the-t...
This is EXACTLY the BS I am talking about. How the hell can the kids build a video for YouTube if someone has not shown them the very basic skills within the software??? An art teacher once said their most dreaded word was POSTER. As in "we need posters for the school dance"...NO NO NO making posters is NOT good art education. "I want the first graders to write a story and illustrate it by next week" ...okay fine...they are still learning the keyboard, they should not be using WORD before 3rd…

(BTW use PAINT with kids...they can create some great stuff with only a few skills) WILL SOMEONE PLEASE REMIND THESE IDIOTS THAT THESE MACHINES WERE DEVELOPED FOR ADULTS IN THE BUSINESS WORLD?????
I am about to go into real battle over this basic premise: it's about PROCESS not CONTENT in the computer lab. You want content, then you talk to your classroom teachers about creating projects in their classroom with their kids AFTER the kids have learned the basic processes.
My admin wants only projects taught during my 45 minutes a week. Doesn't work when the kids don't know how to type, how to fix the monitor when it doesn't turn on, how to use links and toolbars. I almost lost the class this year, but they kept me one more year. Don't know what made them change their minds.
Impressive program...how often do your classes see you? I see each class once a week for 45 minutes x 36 weeks = 27 hours. Take out ten minutes for typing skills, and it leaves me 18 instructional hours per year for ALL IT skills.

Teaching integrated projects should be done in a netbook classroom, not with the IT teacher. The admins do not see this. She wants me covering social studies, math, English and science on a PC in 18 hours a year.
Hey Merle
When I started, I taught K-8, which just about buried me. 800 students, too many lesson plans. But it sounds like you're doing that. How'd you make it work? I had such grand plans that first year and then huzzah'd when they cut me back to K-5. That's about what I can handle, though I miss the sophisticated material I could intro to the olders.

Hi, I've been following your thread and it sounds like you have the same setup as me. I teach k-4 in a computer lab. I try to integrate tech skills within fun projects. I try to reinforce the same skills throughout every application ie - cut and paste in Kid Pix, Word, Photoshop. My goal is for them to eventually learn to figure out things for themselves (like we do!) I try to reinforce the same skills throughout every application ie - cut and paste in Kid Pix, Word, Photoshop. My goal is for them to eventually learn to figure out things for themselves (like we do!) The best tactic for me is to work with the teachers who are open to collaborating and hope that their enthusiasm will be contagious to other teachers. It seems to work, albeit slowly! Then, I always hope that I'll have more teachers pushing the administration for more technology (rather than me being the only squeaky wheel all the time!) Good luck everyone. It's great hearing that others share my frustrations, and you've all given me lots of new ideas. Thanx!!
