We are 2 middle school (Ages 12-13) technology teachers from Galloway, NJ, USA who are interested in collaborating with students in other countries. Specifically, we’d like to set up a culture sharing blog through Edmodo. Edmodo is an easy to use website that can be completely private and does not require student emails. We would create a common group where students could post their experiences of life in their country. The students could post pictures or videos in addition to writing about their country. Furthermore, students will be able to comment on each other’s stories in the comments section. The time commitment for this project would be 5 lessons, spread over the course of a few weeks. This would take place from May 9-May 27, 2011.

We would like to cover several topics over the course of 5 days:

We will describe our culture using the 5 Themes of Geography that we learned about earlier this year. The themes are: Location, Place, Movement, Human-Environment Interaction, & Region.

DAY ONE - LOCATION & REGION: Set up Edmodo and create a post for today's theme.

What is the location of your residence/school? (city, state, country)

Describe the relative location of your residence /school.

In what region of your state or country are you located?

DAY TWO - PLACE: Read the posts from students in other countries, make comments, and create a new post for today's theme.

What is it like where you live?

Describe physical features you have seen in your state or country.

Describe the cultural features of your country (food, music, language, sports etc.)

What are current issues or problems in your community or country?

DAY THREE - MOVEMENT: Read the posts from students in other countries, make comments, and create a new post for today's theme.

How do people, products, and ideas move around in your country?

What types of transportation are used in your country?

How do people communicate with each other?

DAY FOUR - HUMAN ENVIRONMENT INTERACTION: Read the posts from students in other countries, make comments, and create a new post for today's theme.

How does where you live affect how you live?

Describe any environmental problems/issues in your community, state, or country.

DAY FIVE –

Read the posts from students in other countries and make comments. Perhaps post a reflection about this activity.

If interested please email me at monroek@gtps.k12.nj.us

I am a 3rd grade teacher in Connecticut. For the past 3 years my class has made kites in the spring as part of our math curriculum. I started using kites as a way to teach measurement and symmetry, but have since expanded it to applying division and fractions. The students love the chance to use math to make something functional. And, of course, It's great fun to get outside to fly them!
And, of course, It's great fun to get outside to fly them!

Last year I wanted to add cultural exchange and reading and writing into the unit, so I set up a website where classes around the world could share their experiences and cultural traditions around kites. In the end seven schools from four continents participated. Here is a link to last year's site.

This year I hope to build on last year’s project. I will use a wiki to host the project, as it is much easier for multiple participants to add and edit content on a wiki. Also, the wiki has some great resources and ideas for how to use kites in education. Here is a link to the wiki, although it is only in the beginning stage.

The main goals of this project are:
1. For students from around the world to learn about themselves and others by sharing kite traditions.
2. For students to use digital media to share their experiences of building and/or flying kites.

The wiki contains several further ideas of ways to meet these goals, but really it could be worked into your curriculum however you see fit. And video conferencing is certainly a possibility. I would love to have many participants from around the globe. If you are interested or have any questions please respond.
As part of their project I would like them to interact with students or 'experts' from those other regions to get a different perspective on some of the people, events and ideas they will be looking at. We could certainly modify to also include American history and events during that time if your students are interested.

I would be willing to interact in many different ways. We could great our own Ning for the project, converse on Skype, exchange emails, videos and podcasts. Anything is possible. Let me know who is interested and hopefully we can get something going. I would like to begin the preliminary work with the students the second week in January 2010. So far I just have ideas, but would love to find others out there who would like to work through the summer to come up with a global collaborative project. If at all possible I would like to integrate this project in the 2009-2010 school year. Anyone interested???? (wikis, pod casts, e-pals, etc) Insect and Microscopes - Seeking Interested Elem. Next we will send some critters to college - Beckman Institute's Imaging Technology Group Bugscope at the University of Illinois. Students will view bugs through their scanning electron microscope - 2000x magnification! Students and teachers will participate in an online chat with the experts in three separate sessions the first week of May.
