I chose to create a lesson using Epals because I wanted to center my lessons around teaching digital citizenship in the beginning of the school year. When looking for my districts AUP for teachers and students, I unfortunately couldn't find either. The activity that I created was a "seek and find." The kids would research different states AUP's and digital citizenship curriculum and then the culminating activity would be for my students to create an AUP for our school. My thinking was to introduce Epals to my 4th and 5th grade students, put our lesson out there and see which schools would be interested in helping us with our research. I think it gives the kids total ownership of the lesson and a product to share, that they created, by the end of the lesson.
This is a great idea! I like that students would be helping create the AUP and really thinking about the different points of digital citizenship through this lesson. Great idea! May have to incorporate AUP ideas into my mission statement lesson I do the first week of school!
Excellent concept! It helps your students understand the purpose of an AUP, what they might find in one, and could even lead to the development of an AUP for your district. It would be pretty cool if your students could say that they created the earliest draft of your district's tech use protocol.
