Okay, so, I'm WAY over my head right now with my "to do" list! One of the most pressing things on that list is the creation of a new shared reading book unit. The focus and title of this unit is "Reflective Readers." The title of the book I'm using this year is The Sisters Grimm: The Fairy Tale Detectives. I've done this unit before (the "Reflective Reading" unit), but needed to switch to another text more suited to this year's class.

What I'm wondering is that now that we have a larger group, if anyone would like to do some unit sharing? If so, let's get started!

I need anything and everything you have on that Sisters Grimm title.

I'm willing to share SEVERAL units, a couple of my favorites to begin, Artemis Fowl for older readers, and an author study on Kevin Henkes (author of Chrysanthemum and Lily's Purple Plastic Purse) for primary readers (I taught 2nd grade for 12 years).

I'm starting <strike>http://bookunits.wikispaces.com</strike> (UPDATE: NEW URL: http://bookunits.shutterfly.com) as a place to easily share such units, unless someone knows of such an existing site. If so, PLEASE share!

Reply and let me know what you think!

My copy of the book is highlighted and sticky-noted beyond belief so I thought another good discussion thread to start would be some of your favorite quotes from The Book Whisperer. Please feel free to share and comment!
It really is an ENJOYABLE read and I would LOVE to get some discussions going on it. I'm only about 1/3 way through (been too busy to even THINK lately!), but I already have one question for you all.

What about your whole class novel units? Sounds like Donalyn is saying to abandon them.

Hmmm... I'm not quite sure I'm ready to do that. BUT I do mine a little different--no reading outside of class. We LISTEN to the audio book on my iPod while following along with it (every kid has own copy) in class. They STILL get time to read their own books, then, too. I will keep reading, but I really think that the way I handle this whole class novel works well for me. I don't think I'm willing to give it up just yet.
Thoughts? Teaching With Intention (TWI) Chapter 3 Environment, Environment, Environment!tag:www.classroom20.com,2009-01-25:649749:Topic:2716682009-01-25T18:44:32.656ZMichelle TeGrootenhuishttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/MichelleTeGrootenhuisakaMrsTG
First of all, my apologies for not keeping this discussion going. The holidays, vacation, report cards, and breaking in a student teacher have been filling my time lately. I'm hoping we can get back on track. Especially since I'll be reading this book with a group from my school soon--I'd like to have some of YOUR thinking to share with them as well.

I made a graphic organizer to go with Debbie's suggestion on page 30 for putting into columns what you like about your classroom environment, what bothers you, and what you'd like to see. I think this will be a great activity to do with staff when we read the book together. Feel free to use the attached file as you'd please. I'll try to save as a .pdf when I get to school.

Finally, I really need to get my students involved more in creating and organizing our classroom environment together. I think I'll start with allowing them to help me weed through my book baskets. I've got too many books that are not worth keeping (I have a HARD time getting rid of any book!) and I need more room for the new books I order each month from the book order.

How about you? What's your first order of business when it comes to YOUR classroom environment. I went back and found a set of belief statements I had to write for one of my grad classes in 2003. Admittedly, I MOSTLY wrote what I thought the prof wanted/expected to hear, and it's written in a style that's just not "me" or in my voice--too "theoretical" and not very "pratical." I only remembered ONE of those statements. So, I'm glad Debbie is asking us to define our beliefs in this chapter.

So, how would YOU finish the following statement?
Okay,
I HAVE to admit. I felt somewhat intimidated as I read this chapter. I mean, I LOVED how Debbie described this classroom and I would LOVE to visit and see for myself, but I am afraid my own classroom falls short of this "Picture Perfect" model.

BUT, I also LOVE that Debbie has given me something for which to strive. A goal to reach, if not one small piece at a time.

And I also know that even in this classroom painted as "perfect" there are moments when little "Johnny" doesn't behave, a favorite book for today's lesson gets lost in someone's desk or bookbag, an angry parent calls about an issue on the bus, or the kids are just plain squirrely because of the impending snow storm. These thoughts strangely comfort me as I seek some reassurance that NO classroom truly is "picture perfect." Though I'm pretty certain the one Debbie describes is somewhat closer to that ideal than mine. :-)

So, what makes a classroom run this smoothly? What is it that gets these kiddos to stay so focused, active, and excited about their learning?

I have some ideas, but I really want to hear from YOU. Please share. Teaching With Intention (TWI) Introduction discussiontag:www.classroom20.com,2008-11-23:649749:Topic:2215532008-11-23T20:23:02.944ZMichelle TeGrootenhuishttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/MichelleTeGrootenhuisakaMrsTG
All right, let's get started already!

First of all, if you don't actually OWN the book, you CAN read along with us by reading it online at Stenhouse by clicking this link.

I just LOVED the introduction of the book! Oh my goodness--setting up her "classroom" in her basement is SO "teachaholic"! (I'll have to add THAT one to our list on Debbie's behalf!)

Another thing that hit home with me is how she says at the very bottom of pg. 2, "I loved turning the lights down low... savoring the calm... I'd spread out the kids' work...and take time to reflect on where we'd been, where we were now, and where it made the most sense to go next." I honestly NEED to do more of that. I feel so rushed some days, but I know when I DO take time to reflect, I feel so much more intentional about my teaching.

How about you? What did you enjoy in just those first five pages??

And FYI,
feel free to begin your own discussion thread on the book if desired, but I'll try to post about a chapter OR two each week for discussion for sure.
I am hoping to begin a study group on Debbie Miller's latest book with my colleagues at school. Does anyone have or know of any "study guides" available? I've done book studies before and they always seem to go better when we have common questions to tackle as a STARTING point for our discussions.

Also, if we have enough interest, maybe we can try to conduct an ONLINE study through this discussion forum. I'd post some general thoughts and questions for each chapter and then you all could…

Let me know what you think. I'd like to get our group back into the groove here at Classroom 2.0. We've got educators from all over the world--why not take advantage of all that experience?

Hope to hear back from all of you soon!
I teach gifted students and need books that are meaty, have advanced vocabulary and themes and are really new or old! If the books have been in the elementary school libraries my kids have already read them. As we are preparing for the new year I'm deciding what we will read together. I'm considering two books Eager by Helen Fox or The Book Without Words by Avi. Has anyone read either one? What did you think?
