K-8 Computer Lab Teachers

I started a discussion inviting anyone to share resources and ideas about running a computer lab. I am not sure I am doing this right but we will see.

Hi Jacqui

I've been learning so much! I think the most important now is Google Apps and the drive. So much to do with Google in the classroom. Flipped Classroom is a biggie too. Have you ever done a flipped classroom lesson?

Hi Nancy

Thank for the idea, its a great one! I like taking something so simple like, shapes and creating it into a fun technology activity. Do you have anyK-2 lessons for the smartboard?

Hi, David,

I feel your pain. I teach technology to PreK-8 students. With the younger students, find out what they're covering in the classroom and build on that. For example, if the Kdg class is reviewing shapes, I've pulled out my digital camera and we've taken turns looking for shapes and photographing them. Photos can be downloaded into a program to create a slideshow. Or I've passed around my (one and only) iPad and had the kids take a photo of a shape and use the app Explain Everything to have them narrate what shape they found and where they found it. Upload to a class Youtube account and they love it! You've reinforced classroom work, introduced technology, and worked on communication skills.

Hey, David, what are they teaching now in a Tech Ed masters? It changes so fast, I wonder what they consider important.

Thanks!

Last year (2012-2013) was my first year teaching technology. My prior technology experiences was working as a graphic designer. I mainly taught Microsoft Office programs, cyber safety, and a little typing. I only had a half an hour, once a week with grades k-6. I felt that I needed to know more about teaching technology. I went back to college, Wilmington U, to get my masters in technology education. Since January of this year I have learned an abundance of information that I instantly applied in my tech lab. Although that I am learning a lot, I still find myself at a lost, especially with the younger students. If there is any one in this group that can direct me on how to create effective lessons for the student in k-2, please help. I also like some advice on working with Special Ed students with technology.Thank you.

Looking for a resource for educational games online? Check out http://powermylearning.com it's free and all the games are aligned to Common Core standards. And did I mention it is free? ;)

Sorry - I just added a comment and need to correct something. I mentioned that I had an account in Portaportal called preschool. The name is actually TechSmart not preschool.

I just joined your group. I've been teaching K-5 computers since November 2011. Coming in after the year began was interesting especially since I'd never taught computers before. I decided to teach through Microsoft Office programs one at a time as my base and add other ideas as I found them and it worked for me. This year I purchased Structured Learning's set of Technology books K-5 and have used quite a bit of their lessons. I also go to Jacqui Murray's site Ask a Tech Teacher http://askatechteacher.wordpress.com/ when I want to find a quick site for something. I've subscribed to her emails as well. I keep adding more and more sites and activities on my Portaportal account at www.portaportal.com. You can sign in as a guest. I have three - one is named preschool for my PreK students, another is mrsewing for my K-8 and the other is very old and called pataede which I created while I was a classroom teacher. It is a very easy site to set up, but other than creating categories not easy to organize. It just puts each new entry at the bottom of your list in the category you choose. It works for me because the school has very old computers and the other sites I have tried to set up with colorful icons either do not work at all or are very slow on our computers.

I am still working on organizing my ideas for the computer lab and appreciate all the help in this group.

I have taught computers for 18 years to K-5 students. In September I will be in a new school which goes through 8th grade! Help, where do I start with middle school?
