K-8 Computer Lab Teachers

I started a discussion inviting anyone to share resources and ideas about running a computer lab. I am not sure I am doing this right but we will see.

If you are using TuxPaint, I always use the TuxPaint Config to and you can choose an alternate directory to save student work in. I have a folder in "My Documents" called TUX and it saves everything in there.

If you have things you need to get to on a Windows PC, the default location is

C:Documents and Settings/YOURUSERNAME/Application Data/TuxPaint/saved

You do have to have the viewing of hidden folders turned on too...

You can do that through "Tools-Folder Options-View-Show hidden files and folders' once you open the C: drive...

Tux is great, I take the students school pictures and create stamps out of them and load them into TuxPaint...If anyone is interested in creating stamps, I could give you a tutorial, it's pretty easy...

Renee - I used Tux Paint last year when the Kid Pix program we had did not work with the new computers we got. I taught the kids to take screen shots to save their work. Besides having an image that could be used in other apps, if we had trouble printing we could always just print from the image file too. In fact - we used screen shots to save from several programs.

Hey, Renee, I don't use Tux Paint at school. We have KidPix. I didn't know there was a problem with saving. You could take a screen shot and save that way. Hmm...

Faith--I like the stuff you're doing. My 5th graders went crazy over wikis. Everyone created their own. It was so much fun. I noticed you use Glogster. How do your kids like it? Do they boys get into it as much as the girls?

Hi All,
It looks like we're all in the same "class" - so to speak. I teach in a K-4 computer lab. I love what I do! This is my computer lab website where I post links and projects: www.bzkids.org

I started a wiki for projects this year. We did Voicethreads: http://bzkids.wikispaces.com/

One of my favorite projects was Podcast bookreviews by 1st graders: http://www.bzkids.org/1st_grade_book_reviews

This year I did blogs with my 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders. This is the 2nd grade classroom blog: http://www.classblogmeister.com/blog.php?blogger_id=278325. This is one of my 3rd graders' blog: http://www.classblogmeister.com/blog.php?user_id=282311&blogger....

I've been exploring different Web2.0 tools for use in the Primary grades, and I'm also interested in planning a collaborative project with other schools this year. I plan to explore Global Virtual Classroom. Looks like it has lots of potential!

Renee,
I've only used Tux Paint on a Mac, and just click the save icon. The read me does tell you how to name the files and where they save - might be the same for Windows.

for Mac there is also "Tux Paint Config," a GUI configuration tool that lets you set things like window size, full screen mode, sound on/off, and override which folder images are saved in.

See: http://www.newbreedsoftware.com/tuxpaint/download/macosx/

I think I posted this on your page instead of the discussion page. Kerpoof will allow projects the students make to be saved as jpeg. Here is a link to my county's tech page with lots of resources. We are all about FREE so hopefully they will help you too.

Thanks for all the ideas. I have Tux Paint but can't seem to save or export the pics easily. Any suggestions?
