hey, my dad went to st. mary's! it's all coming together! seriously, any earth science teachers out there? do i need to kick the steve spangler habit? know where i can get cheap hydrocarbons? i just did a fun oil spill clean up lab, with stations investigating methane (used bubbles and dry ice) and combustion (roasted marshmallows over coal (charcol)). now i'm on to nuclear energy. i've got tons of dominoes and pennies but lack a good write-up. collected textbooks friday, 8 days to go! jo

Hello evryone

I am a science educator of 15 years teaching physics, chemistry and physical chemistry.

I would like to utilize this group forum to discuss new ideas and methodologies that can be effectively employed in the classroom

I hope that members frequently respond to inquires and ideas on this forum.

Hello everyone, I am trying to build a Personal Learning Network now so I will already have one in place when I start teaching. I am currently at the University of
South Alabama majoring in secondary education in science. My email is jdjanderson@gmail.com, I would appreciate it if you would invite me to be a colleague. Thanks, Jamie

Hi All,

I am putting together a presentation about how web 2.0 tools can meet science learning standards. I am looking for specific examples of how teachers are using web 2.0 in their science classrooms. I am reading your great resources here. Are there any other examples you can share with me?! I'd love pictures of your engaged students!

thank you!

One of my fave's is about the blue ringed octopus and neurotransmitters. It's very much 'edutainment'.

The scenario....

I am walking along the beach/rock pools, and I step on a rock or something sharp. I think nothing of it.

After a few minutes my speech becomes slurrrrreedd. I am having trouble balancinggggg wwwwoooow.

I decide I need to go to the surf life savers, but I am having trouble walking and I can't really see where I am going. I try to tell my friends buuuullllt Iiiy canmt taaaawng properly. My leennngs doooonn work nnn I am shoort of brreatth.

I am blind now, and laying on the beach paralysed. I can't move, cant speak, can't breathe, and my heart has stopped beating.

I have been bitten by a blue ringed octopus. It has 2 pouches of toxin next to it's beak (yes, they have a beak). One is to subdue prey, and the other is for defense and is deadly.

There is no cure for the deadly - no shot or pill.

The only thing that can save me is if I receive 12 - 24 hrs of heart massage to keep my blood circulating until the toxin wears off.

I hope my friends are up to it.

The Blue Ringed Octopus is found around the most populated parts of the Australian coastline. It is the size of a golf ball.

In the general discussion there was a conversation about an on-line Science Fair - has anybody got ideas how this might work and/or are there examples of this out there somewhere already?

I visited latenitelabs and it seems great! Before I try to buy it for my class is there any way, other than demo, to see the real potential of this software?
thx for all

Hello Britt,

I teach chemistry to freshmen and sophomores at a community college. Some of my most successful science lessons are in the laboraotry. And not just hands-on labs, but virtual labs too. I teach an online chemistry lab using LateNite Labs. They are a company specializing in creating a virtual laboratory. Here's the link: www.latenitelabs.com

Hi Mike,
Which area of science do you teach in? I am a year 7 -9 maths/science teacher in Australia. I also teach VCE environmental science. What are some of your most successful science lessons?

Hello All,

It's good to see we have a Science group. Classroom 2.0 is a great environment for exchanging ideas.
