News-Basics.com helps students understand the
history behind current events. The site offers concise background information
about the major news stories of our time, including what liberals and
conservatives have to say about each topic. There are links to in-depth
information and opinion pieces. The site includes a section, “For Teachers,”
with lesson plans and other resources.
When
history and social studies teachers assign students to report on current
events, the assignments often fall flat, because many students lack the necessary background information. If they read about the topics on News-Basics
first, the articles they report on will mean much more to them.
News-Basics is different from other
news-related sites: its purpose is not to report the latest events, but to
give context so students can make sense of the news.
Unlike Wikipedia entries, each article can be read in a few minutes.
