If purchasing Windows OS, virus software and applications is too costly, try this solution. After all it is Open Source, powerful, supported by the world, and represents freedom of technology available for everyone to use in all communities on this planet.

Dell's SX260 is a nifty little computer that works great with LTSP, Linux Terminal Server Project. Our school has received a bunch of these little critters which originally came loaded with Windows XP. Now, I like XP, but I didn't want to deal with purchasing software and the problems concerning virus protection, etc. Ubuntu has been great and I have been running it in my classroom on 16 computers using LTSP and have upgraded that lab to the SX260s. Great improvement from the floppy disk PXE image boot that I had to create in order to connect to the server with my old Compaqs.

I have more of these computers and I was able to find an Ubuntu 8.04 image that works. This is a whole other story. Anyway, I want to use a more recent software option and went through a whole involved process to get Ubuntu 10.04 to work.

Why go through the trouble? Open Source Software is the way of the future. It is a way for schools like mine to provide quality technology for students to use at almost no cost to the school and virtually no cost to the district. If you are using Linux, your computers have built in protection. I have been using Linux in my classroom and at home for three years and have not even experienced a hint of a virus invading my systems. My students do research, write papers, practice typing, play games, play math games, study basic python programming, look up reading levels of their books, etc. I do all this using recycled computers. My district wants to discard them, I catch them at the door. My school is at the poor south end of our district with no funding for technology. It seems as though my partners and I are being watched to see if our little experiment is working. The district is allowing me to do what I want to do. How lucky is that? After all, it is not costing them anything and it is good for kids.

I've also noticed something else. When your intentions are good and when people see you struggling to make something work, like being able to accomplish a goal linked to technology to teach our kids, with minimal resources, old resources, they want to nurture your efforts. I have found angels and resources, or they have found me, that want to help. Now, I am receiving donations. I have to show progress. I can't slow down. My fifth graders keep me moving along as well. All this is worth the trouble, a sweet challenge, creating something from nothing using resources from all around the world!
Creating a Live DVD Based on Debian and Ubuntu Operating Systemstag:www.classroom20.com,2011-01-02:649749:Topic:5790862011-01-02T18:20:13.675ZGeoff St. Pierrehttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/GeoffStPierre

option. Then I remembered a software application that I had on one of my computers at home. I run “AV Linux 4” a special Linux multimedia media brew based on the real time kernel . It has many of the cutting edge applications for video, music production/recording, and graphics. Download the operating system here:http://www.bandshed.net/AVLinux.html.

Anyhow, the software application is called Remastersys. You can get

it through the Ubuntu Synaptic Package Manager or go on line here:

http://remastersys.sourceforge.net/ . It is specially created for
Debian and Ubuntu based operating systems. It uses a simple GUI
window. One of the options asks if you would like to create a copy of
your OS to share with others. You click on this option and the
software will create a Live install DVD or CD image clone of your
system. You then burn the image on to a DVD or CD depending on how big
the file is. Now you have a Live CD to share with others. You can try
it on any PC without touching the hard drive. Then, if you like it you
can install it.

It worked on the Dell Optiplex SX260 computers. First, I installed
Ubuntu 8.04 on one computer, installed all the updates, and finally
installed the most ideal software that I will use in my classroom.
Then, I used Remastersys to create the Live DVD of this system. Now I
have a DVD that I can use for imaging the other computers, a 45 minute
process. In essence I have created my own custom made Ubuntu Linux flavor.

Here is a tutorial: http://www.dedoimedo.com/computers/remastersys.html
The Next Challenge, that Brute, Dell's Little Optiplex SX260tag:www.classroom20.com,2011-01-02:649749:Topic:5790772011-01-02T17:15:54.503ZGeoff St. Pierrehttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/GeoffStPierre
We have been fortunate enough to receive a cache of Optiplex SX260

could use them as they are, reinstalling Windows XP, needing to

We have been fortunate enough to receive a cache of Optiplex SX260
computers, fine machines, remnants from the year 2002, running Windows
XP. They are rather cute little machines with a big heart. Now, I
could use them as they are, reinstalling Windows XP, needing to
purchase virus protection, finding/purchasing effective educational
software, paying for various licenses, updating drivers, and
downloading/installing software. But I am not going to do this. These
are my goals if I can accomplish them.

1. Wipe the drives clean and install Ubuntu 8.04.1
2. Install software available through the Ubuntu Repositories that
will help in production and teaching.
- Open Office: Open Source version of Microsoft Office that will open,
modify, and save in the Microsoft office format.
- Specific Edubuntu education software such as KTouch (typing),
TuxTyping, KCalc (Math), Gimp (Photoshop Nemesis, a good graphics
program too), Inkscape (drawing), and Idle (a simple python
programming editor) to go along with my PDF programming for children
book. This is just mentioning a few.
3. Put them in teacher's classrooms.
4. Train teachers to use Open Source software.

THE PROBLEM
Of course life is never that easy. This little beast is resistant to
change, like many of us, and refuses my attempts to change its
identity, thwarting my efforts to install, sweet Linux Mint LXDE,
Linux Mint XFCE, Ubuntu 8.04, Xubuntu 8.04, Alternate and Live
Versions of each. The little Dell crashes, freezes, won't start, or
works for ten minutes, then begins to flash pretty colors of white,
red, green and purple with an alternating black screen screaming error
messages at me! I refuse to give in. I have been here before. I think,
remember that old grey Apple 3G tower? He screamed too. Now he is an
Ubuntu machine that only sings the beginning melody of the Apple
legacy.

THE SOLUTION
But, there is hope because the Knoppix Live CD runs beautifully,
however it is really only a live CD and is impractical for my use. I
scoured the Web in search of a solution and found another kernel of
hope. DELL actually makes its own version of Ubuntu 8.04, that
includes proprietary drivers for a basic OEM Iso. installation.
Really, there is a small Linux community sponsored by Dell that has
been working to provide Linux solutions. Yippie! I need to be calm
because as I am writing this my little beast has just finished
updating hundreds of files. Awhile ago I downloaded the Dell Ubuntu
LIve Disk image and burned it onto a DVD and installed it. Round one
worked. I have chosen to stay with the original version of the Linux
kernel for fear of the latest kernel slowing down the little beast,
providing unnecessary add-on improvements. I will end now and restart
my New Linux Challenge. does youtube work on Ubuntu for you?tag:www.classroom20.com,2010-12-02:649749:Topic:5734932010-12-02T00:12:42.315ZGeoff St. Pierrehttps://www.classroom20.com/profile/GeoffStPierre
... it does not really work for me; it works for like 30s per video, but then stops and does not load/stream the rest of the video? This is a deal breaker for me. I get the FLOSS/OSS argument, but I just need youtube;

anyone else have this issue? I had it on my old system; and on a fresh install on a new hp elitebook laptop.
I didn't see any pre-existing threads on this so I'm starting a new one.

Here's what I do:

I give students complete freedom, no restrictions. That means they have the ability to mess something up so bad that the machine won't even boot. That's ok. When I first started messing with Linux, you know how many times I completely trashed the system and had to reinstall before I could keep the machine stable for more than a week? Probably about 20 times, no exaggeration. Now, Linux has come a long way in that time, so screwing things up that badly is quite a bit harder, but I think students deserve the same chance to mess up that I had.

I think the only cost to the students of messing things up should be having to do the reinstall themselves or restore the machine to an image of a working system. (Once I get a machine working just how I like it, I make an image with Clonezilla and on newer machines, it only takes 20 minutes to restore that image and get it working perfectly again).

So that's what I like to do. If anyone has questions, I'd be happy to answer them. There are a number of great software titles for Windows that allow students to access the curriculum, such as text-to-speech (Kurzweil 3000, WordTalk), word prediction (Co:Writer, Ghotit), etc. I am struggling to find similar software for Linux. If you know of any good accessibility software, please post the title.
