Tell you the truth, I don't ask. Since they can't access MySpace or Facebook at school I assume they are using at home--if they are. There isn't much talk around my Center about it. I do make sure that I have signed parent permission for everything I do in the Center.

I went to the Yahoo avatar site, and I made a new avatar for my n2teaching@yahoo.com. Your avatar looks great!

I emailed you (I think) through your blog. Hope you received it!
    Thanks,

    Hi Kolson,

Geez, I do remember my first year, and thinking at the end of it, that if I could just start all over, I'd now know how to do it right. Of course, I learned that every year you start all over again. New kids, new opportunities, but never new stuff to teach with.

In my career (I'm retired now 3 yrs), I spent a few years as the "computer teacher" at a primary (K-2) school and probably learned as much from the kids as they learned from me. The first year with them, we started out on ancient MAC's and no connectivity. Mid-year, they installed a whole new lab - all running Windows (95, 98, whichever was newest at the time), and all with the Office Suite installed. So I asked about children's software, educational software, something for the kids to do with the computers, and was told they hadn't budgetted for that - good luck to me. I learned in that year and the new couple, just how much even Kiindergartners can do with the most basic software on the computer.

BTW, I have started a forum from a discussion in Introductions which will look at the future of schooling and how technology will advance same. The forum is called "Future Schooling". Since you are just starting out, you may find the discussion informative and perhaps challenging as well.

Just a quick thought about your resume -

I am a lifelong learner and keep abreast of new developments with technology and learning through online collaborations dedicated to providing the best possible opportunities for our students. I am able to use relevant and engaging forms of technology that include a range of Web 2.0 applications in my classrooms and have the skills to share these with other teachers.
  • Helen Otway

My pleasure. Good luck with the job application.
    Helen

Wow would you believe I teach accounting as well. There are so few people I know on web 2.0 that do that. I teach year 11 and 12 although this year I only have a year 11 class. I have started a wiki called www.vceaccounting.wikispaces.com if you are interested in what we do in Australia and have a delicious site I think called vceaccounting as well with some great video resources on the web. I want to keep adding to that. I also teach IT to years 4-12. I have taught for too many years but I just love it and love web 2.0

Are you logging onto The Educational Ning-Cast on Talk Shoe?
  • Shavon Davis-Louis

Nope not a twitter...it least not yet :-)
Looking forward to working with you!

    Hi Kolson,
I noticed that you discused blogging with Sally. Are you using blogs with your students? If so does it work? I'm really interested in trying it out with my 5th graders but don't know really know where to start. Any info would help.
    Thanks and happy New Year.
  • Sarah Thompson

Hi again! My students have worked the last couple of days to create a list of Blog Reminders and Blogetiquette rules. Let me know if you would like me to forward them on. sarah_thompson@birdville.k12.tx.us

Hi, I'm in Australia on summer holidays but when school resumes at the start of February, I would be most interested in participating in your project for year 6 - 8's with my year 6 students. I started blogging last year with year 3's which was helpful for learning the skills. Now I want to really start using the resource.
  • Christen Jacobs

I'd be interested if I had the necessary skills. What would they be?
  • Laura Gibbs

Hi Kate! I'm enjoying your Twitter posts! For online teaching, my school is focused on using their regular faculty to teach the online courses (not a very good idea, IMHO) - but I am going to try to teach a course for a new online school, Robert Welch University, next year - I am really intrigued by their goals. You might want to check it out here (I do Classics, which is why this school is of special interest to me): Robert Welch University (they are quite new).

Would be more than happy to blog with you and your kids when you start the middle school blogs.
We can be found at www.pbogush.edublogs.org

    Hi Kate,
Thanks for the invite. We are using Moodle (with wikis and blogs) for most of our Professional Development. I notice you are interested in student projects. I have two - one underway for 10-14 (or so) year olds and another just starting next week for 15+.
    Let me know if interested.

Thank you! Teaching this PD class is so BIG. I have got to learn to set limits. LOL!!
  • Helen Otway

    Thanks. Look forward to it.
  • Michelle Hudiburg

Thanks so much! Be looking for an email so I can get the "prettier" list.
  • samccoy

You do this connectivity/sharing thing so well, I thought you might be interested in a research article abstract, from Nature, I clipped and commented (oops, a tiny rant on the need for public access to scientific research) on:

    Hi Kate,
I like your new photo. I'll show you what i have done with the list later today.
  • Kelley Irish

Glad you liked the wiki page-it has kinda taken on a life of it's own
  • Sue Wyatt

    Hi Kate,
You seem to be very much "up with it' with regard to Web 2.0 in classrooms and I sent you an email re joining your youngbloggers blog once my class goes back this week. Hope we can join in with you.
  • Sue Wyatt

Apparently the email addy I sent it to wasn't yours, so someone else must be wondering about Web 2.0 and youngbloggers ... lol
  • Aaron Bray

Thanks for the advice. I will definitely check out wikispaces.

I grew up not too far from LaCrosse. It's a beautiful area. They also have some really impressive Chinese programs at both Central and Logan from what I hear. Well, thanks again. Enjoy the rest of your weekend.

    Hi Kate,
Yes both I and my class would like to be on the youngbloggers. I think I have already commented somewhere and some of my students have looked at the page already.

    Hey Kate

I did my Master's through Nova Southeastern in Ft. Lauderdale. They have an EdTech one, but mine was Teaching and Learning/K12 Technology Integration. I learned a lot, but had to do my own searching to supplement the tech integration part.

Looking forward to "working" with you as a host/greeter :)

    Hi Kate,
I started a page in January for my staff. We are young at this type of thing. I had most of the staff invited, a couple of pictures and one video. It was all there last month but has disappeared except for two staff members. Any ideas why?
  • John Bartlet

    Hi Kate
I'm trying to customize my page, but when I click on a template and save nothing changes. Do you have any ideas?
  • Shelley Szipszky

Help! I had several replies to my introduction in my email and many were deleted before I could read them.. How do I find them without the email notifications.
  • Shelley Szipszky

    Thanks so much.

    Dear Kolson,
I am doing an ethnography for a master's class and am having trouble coming up with answers to questions like what rules govenrn behavior in CR20 and how are decisions made. I realize those are broad categories to address, but any help that you could offer would be greatly appreciated.
  • Courtney Rodgers

Hi. I thought I saw a comment from you about using the teacher's gmail account and adding + and the student's name in order for them to have access. Of course I couldn't find the comment again. At any rate, if memory serves, you said you'd give more info/help on this. So if you can, I'd like a little more info when you get a chance.
    Thanks.
  • Courtney Rodgers

so would they be able to use googledocs as different users? i teach middle school english and i want to be able to utilize the color-coded system for revisions and such.
