I manage the information services department for DKG Society International which honors exemplary women educators. I am also a member of the organization. I retired with 30 years as an educator from Memphis City Schools in 2009.
We meet again!!!! As we said before, it's a small world (online). :) I haven't been very active in this network for the past few months as I have been swamped at work! Maybe now that our class is over, I can participate more.
Are you going to attend NECC this year? If so, maybe we can meet up there. I am excited to be going because last year, in Atlanta, I was the Poster chair and did not get to attend any of the sessions, etc. except briefly.
I'm based in Chicago and focus on connecting inner city kids with volunteers in non-school tutor/mentor programs where volunteers serve as tutors, mentors, coaches, friends, etc. I have a page on Classroom, and Ning.com and host a web site that provides information that people in Chicago and other cities can use to build and sustain such programs in more places. I encourage you to take a look.
Collecting and organizing knowledge that adults or students can use is one use of technology that can involve students who are learning to be problem solvers, or who are learning to use technology to communicate and build networks. Thus, teens and adult volunteers, in Memphis could be duplicating much of what I do, drawing attention to volunteer-based programs in Memphas, while kids in Detroit and other cities could be doing the same.
I host a May and November conference in Chicago and have had some participants from Tennessee in the past. I hope you'll share information so that we can continue to build this connection.
