I am the founder and director of the Learning Revolution Project, the host of the Future of Education interview series, and founder and chair or co-chair of a number of annual worldwide virtual events, including the School Leadership Summit and the Global Education Conference, Library 2.0, the Future of Museums, Gaming in Education, and the Homeschool Conference.
I pioneered the use of live, virtual (and peer-to-peer) education conferences, popularized the idea of education "unconferences," built the first modern social network (Classroom 2.0) for teachers in 2007, and developed the "conditions of learning" exercise for local change. I supported and encouraged the development of thousands of other education networks, particularly for professional development. For the last eight years, I've run a large annual ed-tech unconference, now called Hack Education (previously EduBloggerCon). I blog, speak, and consult on educational technology, and my virtual and physical events build community and connections in education, with 450,000 members and over 100,000 participant log-ins annually.
My newest project is SmallIsBeautiful.com, events around the intentional move toward small-scale, local food, living, community, work, and learning.
I have been the Emerging Technologies Chair for ISTE, a regular co-host of the annual Edublog Awards, the author of "Educational Networking: The Important Role Web 2.0 Will Play in Education," and the recipient of the 2010 Technology in Learning Leadership Award (CUE). I have consulted or served on advisory boards for Blackboard, CoSN, Horizon Project / New Media Consortium (NMC), Instructure, Intel, KnowledgeWorks Foundation, MERLOT, Microsoft, Mightybell, Ning, PBS, Promethean, Speak Up / Project Tomorrow, U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. State Department, and others typically focusing on educational technology and social networking. A number of corporations and organizations support my events, and you can see a list and more details of my projects at Web 2.0 Labs.
Personal Information: I was a foreign-exchange student through AFS to Brazil for a year in high school, and organized and led group tours for several years as my first job after college for Stanford's Alumni Association. I spent 2013 traveling around the world talking to people about education. I have the skin condition Vitiligo and created the world's largest social network for those with Vitiligo at VitiligoFriends.org as well as the UniquelyBeautiful.net site. I also run a network for members of the extended Hargadon family--Hargadon is an Irish name, and all Hargadons come from Sligo.

Online Educational Comics Helping Students Write, Read, Tell Stories
Dear Mr. Hargadon,
I am an author of books that are used in many educational programs to
encourage students to express themselves through writing. I have launched a free new web site -- http://www.makebeliefscomix.com -- where students can create their own comic strips. The site offers fun animal and human characters with different moods, thought and talk balloons to fill in with words, and story prompts. It's a wonderful resource to spur children and adults to write, read and communicate their ideas and to practice English, Spanish and other languages. It is also being I am an author whose books are used in many school programs to used as a tool by educational therapists who work with deaf, learning disabled, and autistic people, as well as trauma victims, to help them understand concepts and communicate. I would be very appreciative if you would share with your members and colleagues, or tell me whom I should contact to share this information. Any list-servs you might suggest would be welcome. I need your help because it takes a community to build a community resource like this.
With thanks,
Bill Zimmerman
Online Educational Comics Launched to Encourage Writing,
Reading and Storytelling in English, Spanish, French, Italian, German and Latin by Author/Journalist Bill Zimmerman
–- http://www.makebeliefscomix.com
Dear reader,
I want to share with you news of my newest educational project and also ask for your help to make it succeed.
A year ago I launched a new web site -- http:// www.makebeliefscomix.com -- where children and adults can create their own comic strips. They can select from 15 fun characters with different moods -- happy, sad, angry, worried – and write words for blank talk and thought balloons to make their characters talk and think. There also are story ideas and prompts to help users create graphic stories.
This site can be used by educators to teach language, reading and writing skills, and also for students in English-as-a-Second-Language programs to facilitate self-expression and storytelling, as well as computer literacy. It is now being used in 160 countries by educators. Some educational therapists use it with deaf and autistic people to help them understand concepts and communicate. Parents and children can create stories together, print them to create comic books or email them to friends and family. Others will find the site a resource to be creative, calm down and have fun.
Because so many Spanish-speaking users asked us for the ability to write their cartoons in Spanish as well as in English, we recently upgraded the site to accept words written in Spanish, including appropriate accent marks. This can be a useful tool for someone who is learning Spanish as well as someone whose first language is Spanish. This feature has also been expanded to other languages, such as French, Italian, German and Latin.
I am hoping that you will share http://www.makebeliefscomix.com with your colleagues, teachers, students or readers of your publications and resource lists. The site is free with no advertising. Any help you might offer in getting word out about this project is very appreciated. If you can suggest other people or groups whom I might contact to make them aware of the site please send me their names, email addresses or phone numbers. Any list-servs I might join? Relevant Internet resource sharing groups would be helpful, too. It takes a community to build a useful resource like this one.
As one who learned to read with comic books, I know that creating comic strips can help people tap into their creativity and practice their language and storytelling skills. The site is free and stems from my lifelong mission to create resources that help people find their voice and express themselves. The concept for makebeliefscomix.com is derived from my earlier books, Make Beliefs and Make Beliefs for Kids of All Ages (which can be found on my other web site: http://www.billztreasurechest.com). A Make Beliefs interactive feature appeared for 13 years on my syndicated Student Briefing Page for Newsday, and in National Geographic’s World Magazine.
I hope you like http://www.makebeliefscomix.com and will use it in your work and personal life. Your feedback is welcome and very helpful.
I am an instructor at Big Bend Community College, Moses Lake, WA and a great beneficiary of your very great work at Classroom 2.0. I recently attended the excellent conference you organized in San Francisco. Good job!
I have a great need and i am hoping that you will assist me to reach as many members of Classroom 2.0 as possible.
My need is this. The alumni association of the high school that i graduated from in Nigeria is in the process of starting a campaign that is aimed at improving the learning environment at the school. Presently, due to lack of funding, the learning environment is not conducive for the students. The infrastructure is completely not in place. One area that the alumni has identified is the need for books. I want to appeal to Classroom 2.0 members to help my old high school with books (old or new). the books can be on any subject area that is high school level.
The name of the school is Federal Government College, Wukari, Nigeria. The alumni website is www.fgcwukarialumni.org. My email is zacht@bigbend.edu
Hi Steve,
Thanks for the party today! I have gained so much from being part of this network. My learning curve has been steep and the journey has been lots of fun! I am now in a role where I can share many of these wonderful web2.0 tools and resources with others. This makes it even more rewarding.
I am more than happy to welcome people to Classroom 2.0.
Award...LOL...I have a bad habit of going all out on a new job, especially if I get to use my computer. Just ask my principal :-)
I just never thought about doing it before now. It doesn't take much time, and it's nice to know someone cares that you are there. Thanks for encouraging volunteers to step forward.
Hi Steve
Great work with all the "Classroom 2.0 Live Conversations". I have just added the google calendar to our Events link - http://edubloggerdir.blogspot.com/2008/01/search-results.html
Hope to see you joining the Directory sometime :-)
Patricia
I'd like to recommend that you add at higher ed place to this site. I have looked at other sites and I still find myself coming back here to connect with educational professionals
Thanks! I'm just a learner, who several times gets confused with what these Web2.0 terms mean. Then I rush to find out the meaning and am still trying to get it all. Thanks for the encouragement anyway. Self learning can be time taking, and thats when little notes like yours can make a difference. I also went to the "take a tour" and heard your talk. Helped to clear the cobwebs of the "web" a wee bit.
Hi Steve, I am just writing to inform you of my problems editing anything on my page. I cannot post a blog, edit my profile or even sign out. Is there something I can do? I would like to start afresh but as I cannot sign out this is impossible. Since you are THE MAN I thought you might be able to help. Thanks
Steve, you champion! I found out that my problem was with Internet Explorer. This is the last straw with this program so I have promptly switched my defaults to Firefox. All is well, Thankyou and great job on this fantastic resource!
Hi Steve,
Around last week you had posted a link to a wiki you had created with different social networks . I looked and looked for that post and the link without much success. I would greatly appreciate if you could leave me a comment with that link.
Thanks.
Hi Steven - I have just watched the "Creating A Ning Network" session that you did in April? Being new to all of this, I have found it really useful. I had joined CR2.0 and played with the profile etc. so some of it was familiar to me, but you have made the rest of it really clear. I have asked all of my students to come up with a name for our social network so that they have some "ownership" and hopefully we will get it up and running within the next couple of weeks. Baby steps to start though.......
I will contact you with link when we have set up the site so you can give me your informed opinion perhaps?
Thanks again - Karen
HI Steve and thank you so much for your wonderful presentation on web2.0 is the future of education, for our Victorian Knowledge Bank online conference in Australia.
You have given us so much food for thought and I know from my own brief experience with using web2.0 tools that the content of your session is so correct.
I am sure that our dept will be amazed at the audience in the conference session as it included not just Victorians (as they had intended) but educators from England, USA, Hong Kong and all over Australia. Thanks again for sharing.
Happy to find like-minded people like you. Distance education is will be the thing for the future since a lot of people cannot lock themselves up in classrooms for God knows how long. Back here in Ghana, i have developed a television show called 'ADULTS IN EDUCATION' which i have been using to educate the populace. Unfortunately I am off air because of financial reasons but i am working hard to bring the show back. I BELIEVE EDUCATION SHOULD BE AS INEXPENSIVE AS POSSIBLE AND EASILY ACCESSIBLE.
I apologise if my idiosyncratic way of letting people know of a breakthrough product like Moodle Analytics has amounted to the sanctity of this really cool network for agents of social change. At times when you do a lot of study and effort behind a product, then a nice product like Moodle Analytics comes up which in every sense can change the performance perception of online classes , a natural excitation comes to yell at the world and say its here. So, may be my comments are a manifestation of such crazy behaviour. Hence, request you to accept my apology for this.
Hi Steve, I found a link the other day about an interview that you had with the executive director (I think????) of ning but can't find it again. Can you point me in the right direction?
Many thanks
Judy
Wow! I just heard about this site and am excited to start exploring! I see that this site was built using Ning (which I also very recently discovered). I was very excited about creating a closed social network for my students, until I found out that my district blocks Ning and they won't unlock the subdomains for my individual classes (e.g. italianouno.ning.com). How were you able to create a Ning site without using the Ning.com domain? Maybe that is my solution to my school's filtering "problem." Thanks for sharing!
Hi Steve
i am trying to let everyone know about www.teenlivedrive.com for teenage driving education.
i noticed you seem to be real smart about 2.0 and i wondered if you like the site, could you send the link through your 2.0?
i hope you don't mind me asking...as i am trying to keep this
going for teenagers.

Hi Steve,
It's Saturday so I am actually enjoying catching up with the classroom 2.0 community. I noticed that Nancy B won a huge grant for her district and that a couple of her Kids were even selected by the Google doodles folks. It got me to thinking.
What about a spot where these great accomplishments are recognized! Nancy never said a word I just ran across the entries when I check out her student blog. Educators so rarely get any real "Kuddos" because we focus on giving those to our kids. But perhaps recognizing some of these great web 2.0 educators would inspire others?
We already have the website of our project finished and we’d like to share it with you.
The goal of Bablingua is to offer good audiovisual materials filmed in Hispanic countries that can help teachers to enrich their classes. In the website there are short videos, long videos, vocabulary cards and a blog with free activities, games and new ideas for the foreign language class.
Please, visit us at : www.bablingua.com, and let us know your opinion, comments and ideas you have to improve it.
I understand your position but am saddened. When I have something (words or products) that are relevant to the situation which I am commenting on, I think it important that I share that.
However, I will take you action under advisement and, should I decide to post future comments, I will change my approach.
Hi Steve,
I started a discussion this about an hour ago and don't see it on the front page. Do you have to approve it before it will appear there?

Hi Steve,
I started a discussion again and it still isn't on the front page. Are you featuring certain discussions? Usually the most recent one pops to the top.
I'm doing really well. I like my new job a lot (I'm the Director of Academic Technology at an Independent school). I've been presenting at a few conferences. Alan November is giving us space to do an edubloggercon before BLC again this year. I'm also going to be at NECC this summer for edubloggercon - I hope to see you there.
The Ning support team was quick to get back to me and have now resolved the issue. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction & keep up the good work with this community!
I hope all is going well - I'm sure you are happily busy, as usual. Also, want to say how I appreciated your finely and properly positive ideas on the Brittania blog exchange.
I've been also happily busy -- will have a Project Peace coming out on a Ning network and will describe shortly on Ning in Education. Ning, kindly took off the ads there. Educators will download material to easily make videos using classroom members, to promote peace. Will launch Dec. 8th - John Lennon's remembrance day.
However, I'm writing about something I proposed awhile back and we both just got too busy for. A Classroom 2.0 bookstore. We have a great book community of teachers and I've set up bookstores for a few other networks besides Classroom 2.0. Works well. Teachers can make "book talk " discussion threads and I or others can load them up as categories in the bookstore for teachers to quickly get a good sense of what are the great new and timeless books for any category. Classroom 2.0 would get revenue from all sales also, easily monitored.
Here is the bookstore. Teachers have also found it through the few times I've mentioned, and already ordered books there. What is needed is some kind of button, link on the main page of Classroom 2.0. It's your call but I think it would be a great addition - especially for new teachers, to quickly see a selection of teacher (not Amazon) recommended books.
Get back to me on this when you have time....Cheers,
Dude, I'd love to be added to the greeter/hosts team if you think my help wd be of value to the network. That'd probably get me in here more often, too! Let me know...
Please check out our site again when you get a chance OpenClassroom Community, we appreciate your input and would love to get more in these early stages of development.
Thanks!
Just wanted to say I read the latest NEA Magazine (January issue) and saw the article on Social Networking, it was great to see you in there and the plugs for Ning and Classroom 2.0!!
My name is Alyshia Olsen; I am a 20 year old college student from Olin College of Engineering. I am a part of a group of 6 Olin College students (we're in Needham, MA, and engineering students) who has taken a year off to work on an education related project. Since you are in the 'e-learning and online teaching' group, I thought you might be interested! Our project is called AlightLearning, and this is our "short" project description:
Under the assumption that within ten years, the landscape of modern education will have fully integrated what we now define as new classroom media: video, online collaboration, open source curriculum and other web tools, we hope to pioneer a web software tool that acts as a platform for this new media, bringing the power of the web and its tools to students, teachers and parents in a secure, comfortable and innovative environment. Our goal is to have our free software at a pilot middle school by April 15th, 2009, continuing to develop and coordinate with our users to create a product that other schools want to pilot and use at their schools, while allowing individual teachers to implement this tool in their own classroom.
Our project, titled Alight Learning, is currently trying to win a competition for startup funding on ideablob.com. You can find us at http://ideablob.com/3975 . We would love your support in the form of a vote within the next couple days, but more importantly we'd love your feedback and comments. Our description on Ideablob is short, and even the one above hardly gets at many of the issues we would like to take a stab at solving, but at least it's a start.
Feel free to email me back, check out alightlearning.com, anything you like!

Get back to me on this when you have time....Cheers,
David

Alyshia Olsen
Thanks,
Alyshia Olsen
