What occupies me lately? I wrote a book with coauthor Suzie Boss titled "Reinventing Project-Based Learning: Your Field Guide to Real-World Projects in the Digital Age" Suzie and I are meeting with lots of teachers and educational organizations to support new practice. We are excited about the promise of pbl and professional learning in the web 2.0 era, where important learning functions (collaboration, learning anywhere, many more) are made possible through a myriad of new and emerging tools.
I've just started another book on the topic of inquiry. I'll be listening deeply to my Classroom 2.0 colleagues to learn what how they foster a culture of inquiry and guide deep learning through PBL.
Hey, Andy! Nice to meet you. I wrote a blog entry about the power of these tools for professional development (my main interest). Here it is, Social Networks and Education: http://reinventingpbl.blogspot.com/2007/10/social-networks-and-education_08.html
I'll be interested in your take on the various environments you and Sally are examining.
Hi, Jane! Can't wait to see the book. I have been sending some new resources over to you through del.icio.us network. Miss you!! Let's try to be in the same place at the same time sometime soon...
Hi Jane~ I'm wondering if you'd mind if I posted a bit of a promotion in the XO community. My company, ChitChat (http://ChitCh.at), bought a couple of XOs, and is giving one away on December 7th to a random teacher who signs up. We're just launching, so I'm looking for some leads and thought it might be a mutually valuable proposition. But if you think it's shameless self promotion, feel free to ignore me. Best of luck! -Jack
Thanks for the welcome..I am finding all sorts of 2.0 resources ! I think this is a great site for information. As a librarian, teacher and an administrator -- it's very useful. I have already made my first sample video on Animato , started a scrapblog and more!
Jane, thanks for the comment and the links. I'll take a better look at them when I have more time. Really, I'd like to know more about Springboard Innovations. That sounds cool. When did you start it? How did you get going? What kind of projects are you working on with that?
Hi Jane,
Thanks for the introduction! I'm in the process of setting up a wiki site for a leadership development program I support and need all the tech help I can get! Do you happen to know if you can embed a Ning or other social network souce inside a wiki site?
Kristin
Hi Jane--I love the link that you posted about classroom decor. I am a tech resource teacher in Virgina and just the other day I was trying to think how I could suggest how to spruce up some classrooms. Thanks to you, I'll be able to make it a technology integration blog post (required by our I.T. department to have blogs).
greetings, jane...i love you site...i may have joined numerous times...sorry....having a few technica l difficulties here in izmir....hope all is well...cheers..julieanne hanna
Jane, I have to confess I thought of you today, as the notion "death by pbl" popped into my head! This wildflower project will do me in someday:

Hi Jane,
Thanks for the kind welcome. (I used to live in Eugene years ago.) I'm a high school English teacher and a consultant for the Western Mass Writing Project. I'm really interested in learning more about how to integrate technology into my teaching. I'm not sure where to begin...except in my own classroom right now. I'd also like to find out how to get more training so that I could become some kind of tech liason in the field of education...
Thanks Jane,
Appreciate your kind welcome. I work in a public citywide special education school for children with multiple disabilities; we have little resources so I’m always looking for ideas that are practical and inexpensive.
Hi Jane,
I thank you for your quick response. I do not have a blog. I will work my way in to setting one up shortly. have lots of interests. Presently i am interested in finding out more about Dyslexia and literacy interventions that would be most appropriate for supporting these children. It is a huge issue right now in my School District. Any ideas ?
thanks for the welcome, jane. i'd love to learn more about moodle and other open source software. i also would love to connect with educators creating free educational content for distribution via the web. i love creating content as a hobby, but am energized when i work with others on such projects.
Jane,
Unfortunately, my computer is being updated and they did not finish today. I will not be able to join the session in 2nd life. I hope we can meet and chat at NECC.
Kathy
Thank you for the session in Second Life. I enjoyed it though I certainly don't move my avatar well. I'll be revisiting the wiki and the book ! Thanks again.
Jane, Just saw your message about my photos and would be happy to post some to the group. Coincidentally--I just heard you on either EdTechTalk or WOW a week or two ago, and then your book came in an order, so talk about kismet!
Thanks for the welcome! I am a technology teacher in Northern Canada. I am interested in open source and educational software. I am also actively working on the open source project called Nikamo. Nikamo is used for teaching human languages and was originally designed to help preserve aboriginal languages. I am also looking to network with others who may be interested in language teaching and language preservation.
Hey Jane-
I just sent you a friend request. Daniel Rezac. I'm a teacher 2.0 in Chicago working on my master's and need some questions answered about curriculum development. I see that you are a PBL queen, so maybe you'd let me interview you for my field study? Any help would be great!
Thanks

Hi Jane,
I'm a friend of Terry Smith's. I teach in Bridgeport, CT. We've been collaborating with Terry's class. Our blog is http://thebrainwaves.us. Small world, my daughter lives in Springfield, my son-n-law graduated from the Univ. of Oregon. I just returned from two weeks at Hayward field for the Olympic Trials. We also ran the Butte to Butte on July 4th. I'll be joining your session tomorrow.
Hi Jane,
I bought your book, Amazon says it’s on the way. I can’t wait. Thank you for allowing me to participate in your group today. I learned things about Terry that I didn’t know before. Our classes held several video conferences, we blogged regularly, we participated in the Landmark Games and we will join the Monster Project this September. It is amazing, when you realize that we only began January 2. We also participated in Voices of the World. We are the only school in Bridgeport (the largest city in Connecticut) that blogs or does any of these projects. For awhile I was the only class. I now have one other teacher who has joined in.
I get out to Oregon at least once or twice a year. My daughter is already making plans for us to beat our times in next years Butte to Butte. I will definitely look you up when I get out there.
I’d like to pick your brain after I read your book. I hope you don’t mind.

Hi Jane,
Haven't checked this for a while...sorry! I am located in Bellingham with a view of the San Juans! Don't know anyone out there. Have you touched base with Susan Brooks-Young? She lives on the islands and is really connected with classrooms. She might have a lead. Good luck!
Hello Jane,
I noticed you are in Eugene, and I was wondering if you planned to attend the Eugene International Film Festival Oct 3-5. If you do go, you may be interested in the film series, Adina's Deck ( www.adinasdeck.com ) which is perfect for the increasingly more tech-savvy middle school students. The films are short, entertaining and extremely "watchable" and are educational for kids, teachers and parents. Episode 1, the cyber bully pilot episode, won best student film at the International Family Film Festival. Episode 2 is the Case of the Online Crush, and touches on the dangers of online predators. Episode 3 in the Case of the Plagiarized Paper the deals with the consequences of cheating. The writers, directors, and lead cast members participate in live discussions when they have attended dozens school assemblies and film festivals. They are booked to appear at many more locations this school year. Like in Episode 1, the story-lines of Episodes 2 and 3 create a lot of "who-done-it" suspense, with plot twists that are sure to promote a lot of discussion on these real, timely topics.
The students really get into the discussion topics, and want to know what the characters will do next. Adina's Deck is a valuable and socially important tool.
Hi Jane,
Thank you for your reply. The Eugene International Film Festival presents about 70 films throughout the three-day event. They sell an all-festival pass, but they also sell individual tickets for $8. I'm not sure when Adina's Deck will be shown, but you may be able to contact someone from their website: http://www.eugenefilmfest.org/ The schedule has not been posted.
The film's creators, Debbie Heimowitz and Jason azicri, plan to attend. I have attended several film festivals and found them all to ve very interesting and usually a lot of fun. I wish I could be in Eugene but I have another commitment in Chicago during that time. Thank you for your offer to place posters, but there just aren't any for that event.
Hi Jane,
I would love to hear more about your university course on project-based learning with technology. Are you speaking anywhere soon? Thanks! dobrien@viedu.org
Hello,
FYI, Adina's Deck will be shown at the Regal Cinemas at 2 PM Sunday October 5th, in theater 12. I noticed from the festival schedule that they will also be showing the "Making of Adina's Deck" documentary, which goes into the school-site research prior to production. See http://www.eugenefilmfest.org/ for more information and details of the Eugene Film Festival. I wish I could be there.
Just a quick follow-up, in case you are interested:
Adina's Deck won an award at the Eugene International Film Festival for Best Short Film in the Young Audience catagory! Thank you Eugene!
Also, we are showing Episode One, and it will be the World Premiere of Episodes Two and Three, this Saturday in Modesto. We expect 400 to 500 to attend. You can see teasers for the two new films at the Adina's Deck myspace site:
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=193616683
Jane, I am reading your book, Reinventing PBL, and it is excellent. I picked up a copy at the Mass CUE technology conference last month. I am recommending it to other technology specialist and to teachers interested in PBL. You do an excellent job balancing the pedagogy with the technology tools.
No chance that I'll be going to any more conferences this year, Jane. Money is already tight in my district and it looks like its only going to get worse. I'll look forward to the second edition.
I think I talked to you on the education.ning network, but I can't remember anymore...My name is Marco Morales; I am a 20 year old college student from Olin College of Engineering. I am a part of a group of 6 Olin College students (we're in Needham,MA, and engineering students) who has taken a year off to work on an education related project. I've until recently only been active on the education.ning.com website. For the project I'm working on talking to teachers who strive to integrate technology into the classroom is always interesting, since most of the teachers we have actually sat down and talked to tend to be teachers who aren't as active in terms of new tools and how to use them in the classroom. Our project is called AlightLearning, and this is our "short" project description:
Under the assumption that within ten years, the landscape of modern education will have fully integrated what we now define as new classroom media: video, online collaboration, open source curriculum and other web tools, we hope to pioneer a web software tool that acts as a platform for this new media, bringing the power of the web and its tools to students, teachers and parents in a secure, comfortable and innovative environment. Our goal is to have our free software at a pilot middle school by April 15th, 2008, continuing to develop and coordinate with our users to create a product that other schools want to pilot and use at their schools, while allowing individual teachers to implement this tool in their own classroom.
Our project, titled Alight Learning, is currently trying to win an idea competition on Ideablob.com You can find us at http://ideablob.com/3975. We would love your support in the form of a vote within the next couple days, but more importantly we'd love your feedback and comments. Our description on Ideablob is short, and even the one above hardly gets many of the issues we would like to take a stab at solving, but at least it's a start. We also have more written in the comments/advise section on the ideablob website.
Feel free to email me back, check out alightlearning.com, anything you like!
Thank you Jane. I will utilize the features here ASAP. Dancing as fast as I can on other projects...this site was recommended to me by a colleague. I like the looks of it!
hi jane, yes tolweb is still going. it is a phylogentic database - there are pages on the database structure you can check out, and you can even download it. there is no set way for students to use it computationally. you can check out learning.tolweb.org for some learning aspects.
Its all very daunting at the moment...but hopefully I will survive... I guess most people do!!! Im really excited about the potential that is out there!!! There is so much I just want to do and use in the classroom.
Hi Jane, you may not be the right person to ask but...I am doing some professional development on using nings in classrooms (grades 9 and 10 primarily) and it is very difficult the find examples of "ning classrooms" because they are private and open by invitation only. There is no way I can tell of asking those teachers if you can join for these purposes. All the folks I trained today really wanted to see was examples of other teachers sites.....I posted a discussion in the help section section of Ning in Education but only one person has responded (her response was invaluable). thanks for any help - it is greatly appreciated!
Jane,
I am doing a presentation next week in Austin, TX at the Texas state convention of computer educators on Classroom 2.0 website.
While showing the attendees how to navigate the site, I would like to highlight some of the 'best' forums, blogs, member profiles, photos and videos. Do you have any suggestions.
I am asking each of the hosts as you guys are the Classroom 2.0 gurus.
Thanks Jane - yes maybe I didn't make it clear, but I meant I would just get temporary membership so I could show the site at prof. development meetings - not so that all the teachers could join.
The screen shots are a good idea, though not idea :)
If you know of anyone who might let me join for a day or to take screen shots let me know!! Thanks very much for your comment.
I actually think it's hard to move ning forward in education without being able to share examples so I think this is something to think about...and that I don't have a way to actually contact the teachers who have sites other than posting on this site or ning in ed site or similar site (when a site is private you can't ask for membership).
The only person who responded to me actually (Maria F. of http://scienceclassblogs.ning.com/) has an open classroom site and it was absolutely invaluable for the one training I did. I pretty much had no buy-in until I showed that site b/c for the folks in the training they just (hard as it may seem!) couldn't envision that use.
I owe Maria!
