Continue to learn web 2.0 tools and how to effectively integrate them into our curriculum.
HI Jonelle, thanks for visiting my page and leaving a message, I also caught your message on voice thread :-) which btw is still my favorite. I know what you mean by spending too much time catching up on all the web20 tools. Great idea to put that video on dotsub, I'll see if I can find it there.
Hi JoNelle
I saw your comment on the Introductions discussion. We don't have a lab or tech teacher per se. I'll get to go from room to room to meet, demo a lesson, etc. Looks like we are in a similar place with splitting time between students and staff. This year should be interesting! Have you looked at the Professional Development group or Professional Development (newlearning.ning) Networks yet? I think they might be helpful too this year. Delete Comment
Thanks for reading my blogs. I am a person who has opinions about everything so I will probably continue to hang around the blog world for a while longer.
I'm fortunate to teach in a gifted pullout program. The kiddos only come one day a week but we can use the time in that day as we see fit so it's not chopped up. I'd say at a minimum, using the Lego Robotics, you'd need 6-8 two-hour sessions to hold your first competition. We did the Can-Do Challenge first where the robots have to remove 6 cans from a circle. There is a lot of trial and error at first--after the kiddos know how to program the robots, the next challenge would go much faster.
Remember--once a team starts using a kit, no other team can use that kit because the robot is built around a "brick" (the brain) and needs to remain intact. So, you need one kit for each 3-4 (preferable2-3) kids that they will use the whole time.
I have 4 kits---some years I offer animation to some and robotics to others and then everybody can be working on something at the same time. Let me know if you need any other info. N.
JoNelle-
I posted information on how to join the Native American project - here it is:
Project Name: On the Trail of the First People
URL: http://eev.liu.edu/KK/na/index.htm
Description: On the Trail of the First People is an online, collaborative standards-based social studies unit that seeks to incorporate information literacy skills with communicative technologies for 4th and 5th grades researching Native Americans. Classrooms located in the Northeast, Southeast, Plains, Southwest, California, Far Pacific Northwest, and the Far North are invited to research tribes indigenous to their area and then share their knowledge with all through the use of Wikis, Blogs and Social Mapping. Register soon - project begins soon! Contact project coordinator, Karen Kliegman -kkliegman@herricks.org, to register.
Yep. I'll be there working hard (i'm on the planning board) and my job revolves around making sure we have volunteers to scan badges at the sessions or host the desks at registration and information.. There is a wiki to get an assigned slot somewhere if you are interested. Donna Teuber is actually heading it up this year as the SCASL Rep --I did it last year. But I committed to help, and am still on the planning board for whatever that's worth--a cool edtech shirt, free registration, nothing more....
Oh and I'll be presenting on subscribing to blogs and how they help in the pro. dev. dept. (Session Title: Feed the Mind with RSS)
Come on--help out!

JoNelle - I have either 3rd or 4th grade every Tuesday and Thursday 2:40 to 3:10! I would be able to set up a 'hot seat' ala Kim Cofino and they could take turns. Can't project until I swing for one...just bought new glasses...sigh. We cannot download at school so I do not have Skype on school computer to project on SMARTBoard. I also don't know how....yet. Is either time good for you?
We could do it in computer lab and then visit each other's class blogs to read, comment, blog what we thought. Maybe prepare a sentence to the prompt: "My favorite thing to eat is...." + name (first only) + grade (3rd or 4th switch all the time) - what do you think?
The rules section was eye opening for me. The rules started out with lots of negatives, don't do this, never do that, etc. And the consequences were often severe. Check out the history; their perception of our school was far more draconian than I thought it would be! We had a lot of teachable moments there - for teachers and students alike!
Hi JoNelle,
I just read the message you left for me in the Distance Collaborations discussion about having Chinese families in your school. I'm sorry I haven't replied earlier! I'd be very interested in putting together some sort of project with you centred around Chinese somehow. See what we can come up with!
Hello again!
Ok, let's put our head together. Should we make a time to have a chat on Skype, even though there's a big time difference! I've just added you to my contacts. I'll try to come up with some ideas over the weekend and we can aim to be in touch next week if you like. I'm all for video projects - claymation sounds good to me as well. I've never done that before, so bring it on I say!
Chat to you soon,
Jess
Hi JoNelle, Just noticed that you left a comment on the wiki! Thank you so much, the kids will be thrilled. Nothing like the feeling that you have an authentic audience!
Hi JoNelle, yes. You can look at one I use with some of my classes. Some, like my planning wiki and our staff wiki, are private. Check out http://adminplc.pbwiki.com/ This wiki is being used by an administrator group for doing collaborative work.
http://social907.pbwiki.com/ This wiki was used last year by my social 9 class to gather information and do assignments.
I am using a wiki with my Communication Production Technology class for all their work and assignments. With this, I want all assignments to be handed in on the wiki, getting rid of all need for students to hand in homework!
I have all my videos (including the one showing my daughter and I using StarFall) on YouTube. Here is my YouTube site: http://www.youtube.com/teachertrainer
You can also see the video on my SmartBoard Blog at http://smartboards.typepad.com/smartboard/2007/09/smartboard-and-.html
If YouTube is blocked, I can always upload videos to other video sharing service like TeacherTube. Just let me know what you need.
JoNelle:
There are so many cool things to do you have to prioritize. I have placed a TappedIn calender of events rss feed on my Classroom2.0 page. Check up on it periodically to see if there are events that may be interesting or helpful.
I am going to have to try WeatherPixie first I think. Voki next. LOL These look fun and oops by the way educational; the best kind of learning ;D
Thanks! I have really enjoyed Weather Pixie and Voki. Today's blog posting in the n2teaching blog is about my initial evaluations of these cool tools. I did mention your name with a link to your profile here. N2TEACHING blog: http://samccoy-n2teaching.blogspot.com/
We have our kids one full day week. I would guess that kids could learn the software, build the robots and compete in one challenge in about 12-15 hours. We start with the "Can Do" challenge and recommend no more than 3 on a team. We add sci fi literature and history of robots as an intro. Check out the Scientic Frontier America website for robotics videos. I'll also develop a robot website to store all our stuff so check my website http://adifferentplace.org
Let me know what else you need, I'll be glad to send you my latest grant proposal ($5000.00), it'll tell you exactly what you need to buy.
I'm sending out messages to everyone I know right now, and this classroom20 network is no exception. (I've also sent this out on other Ning networks you may be a part of.) My name is Alyshia Olsen; I am a 20 year old college student from Olin College of Engineering. I am a part of a group of 6 Olin College students (we're in Needham,MA, and engineering students) who has taken a year off to work on an education related project. Since you are in the 'connecting content and technology' groun, I thought you might be interested! Our project is called AlightLearning, and this is our "short" project description:
Under the assumption that within ten years, the landscape of modern education will have fully integrated what we now define as new classroom media: video, online collaboration, open source curriculum and other web tools, we hope to pioneer a web software tool that acts as a platform for this new media, bringing the power of the web and its tools to students, teachers and parents in a secure, comfortable and innovative environment. Our goal is to have our free software at a pilot middle school by April 15th, 2009, continuing to develop and coordinate with our users to create a product that other schools want to pilot and use at their schools, while allowing individual teachers to implement this tool in their own classroom.
Our project, titled Alight Learning, is currently trying to win an idea competition on Ideablob.com You can find us at http://ideablob.com/3975 . We would love your support in the form of a vote within the next couple days, but more importantly we'd love your feedback and comments. Our description on Ideablob is short, and even the one above hardly gets at many of the issues we would like to take a stab at solving, but at least it's a start.
Feel free to email me back, check out alightlearning.com, anything you like!
With your work as a Technology Specialist, I recommend you take a look at Wiziq's virtual classroom and authorstream's power point presentation platform. Both are web based platforms, have a bunch of features and free basic service.
Hi JoNelle. I was wondering if you have any high school contacts who would be interested in participating in a nationwide SAT Vocab Video Contest @ MIT university. You can view contest details at BrainyFlix.com Please let me know. Thanks!
