I am honored to be your colleague on the Classroom 2.0 site. I can tell you are a creative person. I look forward to following you M.U.S.I.C. I think I can learn a lot from you.
I see you present. Do you ever present in the California area?
Actually, I have been navigating your learningfromlyrics.com website- just the very resource I have been searching for that promotes tapping into young peoples' interests to engage them in academia. Thanks for the timely information- I will be in touch soon!
Johnathan - If you are interested in writing for the site, let me know and I will provide you with our author guidelines and information. Happy Friday :)
Jonathon, I really like the premise of your thinking (arts as a way of engaging and strengthening learning). It's very similar to the thinking we use in the organization that I work for. We take a very intentional approach to integrate arts into content area lessons to help students make complex and intricate connections to the material. It makes sense to me. Maybe we can collab on a project sometime.
Two things I didn't say before, but do shape my thinking and after reading your myspace page I thought I'd share. My youngest daughter struggles with school but had a kindergarten teacher who taught her songs that she still sings to this day (she's a freshman) and that speaks to me about the power of music. Secondly, my oldest daughter (I have four) is a gifted musician and linguist and when she has teachers who understand that about her, she excels. When they don't she can be very average. Again it just makes sense to me!. I'm not musically inclined and don't really process information that way, but I'm open to figuring out how I can make it an option in math classes. Again, maybe we can collaborate some time.
Don't worry about looking around for other ideas. I would say lets start a discussion that lets us discuss in front of everyone what our thoughts are, and create some connections. I'm not saying don't look for ideas, but what I think would be more fun for me is to share what I want to achieve in math and you share what you think about connections between music and math and we just share our thinking while working to see if we think it achieves those goals. From looking at the work that you have created with your students, I am interested in your insights. It may be that I'm overly researched these days (finishing my PhD), and I'm more interested in just having a conversation. I bet that our conversation may entice others to join. That's my thoughts. Have a good one!
BTW It also shows another valuable use of the Ning. It's not all about technology it's about the conversations. Would these conversations (this conversation in particular) have developed if we hadn't had this community to bring us together? I think not, because I would most likely not have found your 'blog' or community. This conversation is not about technology, or school 2.0, it's just about sharing and this community brings together people who are open to sharing and creating!!!! Go Ning!
What inspiring projects and units of work for students! Well done. I shall return again as you have got my thinking going on how I could adapt some of your ideas to my ICT classes.
Dear Johnathan I like your idea of taking the school beyond the four walls. I would like to appeal to some students and former students, with low literacy levels and rather bleak prospects, to re-engage in education. I would be great if I could stimulate their hearts and minds.
Hi Jon! I would love to check out the music integration and PBL program! Is there a group or discussion or list of links somewhere I can start checking out?
