Yah, that can be a problem. The only way I know how to deal with that is to use the discussion page for responses. It also creates the opportunity for students to respond more easily to other students. Each page has a discussion page option that is designed so people won't always be commenting over top of each other. It would change your structure somewhat but it might also open up other opportunities.
One thing I do with my students is a considerable amount of metacognitive questions (part of my dissertation work) because I want them to start recognizing how they process information and what processes I'm using to help them process information. It is similar to the where am I at mid-year conversation you started with your students. A lot of other countries (especially Singapore and Japan) use metacognition as part of their instruction. I think it makes sense, so I push it.
Again, thanks for sharing, and I look forward to reading more of your input.
Art just checking, how's the weather in Anchorage? We are getting a cold spell and it's going to hit 15 tonight. I know that's not cold by your standards, but it's cold in Kentucky.
Ouch that's cold! Lots of great people have come through KY because of Fort Knox and Fort Campbell. Thanks for your dedication to our country! I won't complain about having to add an extra layer for the cold (21) today. LOL
