I teach grade 2, all subjects, 1/2 day in English and 1/2 day in Spanish.
I try to use the internet in my classroom for research purposes. I also take my students into the computer lab to play content area games that I have found on the internet as well as to read stories online. Teachers at my school are currently being in serviced on the use of Smartboards. I would also like to work on creating podcasts, and comics with our school's software programs. I don't "assign" tech activities per se though my students have a list of reading at home ideas and one of them is to read a website on a topic of interest.
I am a user of 21st century technologies and am working my way towards feeling comfortable enough with some of them to use them with my students. I am not yet clear on my current students' technology use. You've made me realize that this is something I need to do. Any ideas for how to assess their use of a variety of technologies?
Thanks for asking these questions. They've set me thinking.
Good luck with your project,
Elisa
Hi Penny, I'm not currently teaching a grade, I'm the technology coordinator at a school so let me ask one of our teachers to respond to you question. I will get back to you with the response.
I can respond to you the last two questions though viewing a general picture at our school.
Yes our students are 21st century learners and they know more than our teachers sometimes. We are currently working with teachers to integrate more technology into their curriculum but actually to make it more meaningful learning and encourage students to think and learn by themselves.
Hope this helps you with your connections. I will get back to you.
Hi Penny,
I was wondering why you think kids need to know PowerPoint in order to blog?? I have used I-Movie but don't feel too confident with it yet. We use Garage Band for podcasting at my school. One of the most frustrating things with technology and kids for me is that many times things don't work when you need them to and then lots of time is wasted. Also, our school is not yet wired up for smart board use though we're working on it.
Take care,
Elisa
