The Contact Seminar in La Coruna, Spain

What a small world! Sitting here in my hotel room in La Coruna, Spain, listening to a daily news round –up in Hebrew from Israel Radio, waiting for a Skype chat wife my wife after she gets home from work. Had a very full enjoyable day at the Contact Seminar event which preceded the 22nd ESP (European Schools Project Conference) – “Bridging Education into Society”. Nearly 30 educators, principals and edtech experts from Denmark, Spain, Germany, England, Italy, Holland, Georgia, Portugal, Norway,… Continue

How we have missed the boat,

I been working with in service teachers and doing workshops on Web 2.0 for the past year. I am amazed at how fast this technology has been adapted. Hard held computing in the form of phones, e-books, $100.00 laptops and thin clients all running 2.0 apps will become the new paradigm. The time to build another dinosaur lab, buy expensive laptops or spend any more money on local resources has long passed. Let the big players like Google support the applications, it's time for schools to… Continue

Juggling Quality Time

In this busy world of ours, everyone is always on the go. Things to do and people to see. Parents may find it hard to fit quality time with into their everyday schedule. Some parents use bedtime as a time to talk to each other and for the child to listen to a special story. Others choose to select an activity to participate in that is enjoyable for the parent and child. With that said, how do you find time to spend quality time with your child?… Continue

Web 2.0 Is the Future of Education

A moment of extreme clarity became an obsession for me last week. A session that I had prepared for the IL-TCE conference went from "Web 2.0 Tools for the Classroom" to "Why Web 2.0 Is Important to the Future of Education." Then, as PowerPoint fever gripped me (OpenOffice.org Impress, actually), moving slides around as though they were puzzle pieces finally coming together correctly, I found my thoughts coalescing toward a bold conclusion and… Continue

Learning the Promethean Board

During tonight's eMINTS training, we had a lot of hands on / sharing / how do you do that activities. We had a presenter present who gave basic instruction and asked us to experiment with the four boards that were set up. It was a lot of fun as many participants had learned some fun ways to use the software. Each who had learned to do something fun shared their ideas after we practiced what we were taught. It was fun to see how many people had been "playing" with the software and the boards on… Continue

To Coruna

It’s been quite a while since I have travelled internationally, so I really didn’t know what to expect on this trip to La Coruna via Madrid for the ESP conference. Being aware of the tightening of security checks and precautions since 9/11 as well as the cutbacks on airline operation expenses, I sort of expected a much less pleasant experience than I had recalled while flying in the past. Well I must say I was pleasantly surprised. The experience at the new international Ben Gurion Terminal at… Continue

Grant Writing for Technology Integration

One of my goals is to incorporate more technology into my classroom. Unfortunately, as we have all found, money is tight. I am interested in finding grants and sources for newer technologies to be used in the classroom. I am very interested in the Tablet PC and have found several grant possibilities. Does anyone have any suggestions? What pitfalls have you found in the grant-writing process? I am really looking for suggestions...

Distance Learning

At the present time, I see why “learners prefer not to learn at a distance, if given a legitimate choice.” People are slow to change and embrace new ideas. I have long said that education has not significantly changed in the last 250 years. Recent advances in technology have led the way, finally, to the prospect that education can and will change in the near future, but it will take much public relations work by knowledgeable people.

In my vision for future distance education, there… Continue

How are you using your iPod?

How are you using your iPod?

As I write this blog post, I am listening to one of my favorite podcasts, TWIT, with Leo LaPorte! I am a major user of iPods personally and in the classroom, however, until I listened to a new podcast called Learning in Hand: iPod, by Tony Vincent, I did not realize the many other possibilities it affords. Personally, I use it for music, podcasts, videos and for my review masterycasts. My students… Continue

Now that Julie and I are back from conferences, we are furiously working on the Horizon Project 2008 -- setting the framework, etc.

We've set up a form for those interested in this project using Google Forms (it automaticaly enters it in a spreadsheet.) We are particularly keen on finding additional classrooms in the far east, south America, and… Continue

Science Fair

Does your school have a science fair? If so, who participates? Is it required in some classes, all classes or is it completely voluntary? Any comments you can share about your science fair would be appreciated. We just held our 26th science fair and have revamped and revised it many times over the years. We have had hundreds of projects some years from those that received superiors at the state level to some that should never have been judged to small numbers with most of those projects… Continue

Many Findings .... Less Focus

I used to have apple trees in my yard. One year, the buds for the apple blossoms came out a little too early due to an unusually warm late winter. They were looking good, but they were taking a big risk. Sure enough, a frost came along and killed them off. That summer there were no apples at all on my trees. It was all about timing.

My explorations of the resources, people, and discussions here at Classroom 2.0 have been exhilarating. I have jumped into a couple of discussions about… Continue

Technology and Education

Looking at the rapid advancement of technology the world is changing very fast and with it changing the people’s living style and habits. Everything is driven with the help of technology and it has become really difficult for someone to remember even a single item that doesn’t use technology. Learning has also lent itself in to the hands of technology and has taken a new name as E-Learning.

E-Learning or online education as said by many is the flavour among the students now worldwide. The… Continue

So close, and yet so far

Cross posted from the Nebulog

I recently heard about Wubi - the windows installer for Ubuntu. This utility is listed as a beta release, but it seems fully functional. The very special thing about Wubi is that it allows one to install Ubuntu Linux onto an existing Windows partition. The end result is a dual-boot configuration, without the need for separate partitions. And, since Wubi is installed through windows, it can be uninstalled… Continue
