Possibilities 2.0

"Give me potential or give me death."

~yep, my version of Patrick Henry's stuff

Now that I think of it, I probably could have just entitled this one “2.0″ because this is now what this phrase means to me. I’m not going to go off… Continue

Cell Phones in the classroom

I'm interested in hearing from anyone who is currently using, or thinking about using cellphones as part of integrated classroom technology. Anyone?

How much has changed?

The village school at that time provided all the instruction we were likely to ask for. It was a small stone barn divided by a wooden partition into two rooms - The Infants and The Big Ones. There was one dame teacher, and perhaps a young girl assistant. Every child in the valley crowding there, remained till he was fourteen years old, then was presented to the working field or factory, with nothing in his head more burdensome than a few mnemonics, a jumbled list of wars, and a dreamy image… Continue

It's About Connection

As a middle school teacher, if I have learned anything about being an effective teacher, I have learned it's all about connection. Not connection with 'the class' because there's no such thing as 'the class'. The connection(s) you must cultivate are those between you and each and every student.

Students will largely forget what you say to them but they will never forget how you made them feel. Connection offers the opportunity for you to build… Continue

Where am I in the long line?

Every day the amount of 'things' I discover I could do grows and grows. Just as the store of human knowledge is exploding, so too is anyone's potential to do 'things'.The ability to network that Twitter has brought me in the last few weeks has not helped this dilemma. I could, just about, use all my time watching the hyperverse develop and grow.....

The line I am thinking about is similar to a group going for a walk in the countryside, but… Continue

My 2 cents on 2.0

Google Biz KitIn Web 1.0, a small number of writers created Web pages for a large number of readers. As a result, people could get information by going directly to the source: Adobe.com for graphic design issues, Microsoft.com for Windows issues, and CNN.com for news. Over time, however, more and more people started writing content in addition to reading it. This had an interesting effect—suddenly… Continue

Replacing the Daily Planner with an iGoogle Page

Every year, students receive a daily planner before the start of school. Depending on the grade level, some teachers will spend a day showing students how to effectively plan their week. For most, this is a practical tool that has worked for many years. However, it is also a tool that many students lose. What if it was…

Rethinking Current Events with Newsvine

If there is one thing students and teachers despise it's clutter. One way teachers create clutter is asking students to print out a current event. Students print out weekly current events, read and summarize it, have it graded and then throw it out. I found more current events lying on my floor or in my trash than any other classroom document. Cringing already teachers? Fear… Continue

Goomoodleikiog

Perhaps you, like me, have read and considered the power behind Wikis, Blogging, as well as wondered what's all the HYPE about Web 2.0. Or, maybe you have considered all of the many suggestions about what the best tech tools are or wondered if the World is really going Web 2.0. It seems that many discussions on Classroom 2.0 have been lively and provide great ideas on how we, as teachers, can use web 2.0 tools with our students. I had a handle on these topics and have enjoyed my attempts to… Continue

Introducing the Digital Arts Toolbar and the Teacher Tech Toolbar!

I recently created a toolbar for my Digital Arts students to access the various freeware and cloudware resources we use in class. I also included a directory of engaging educational games and activities. Though it's designed with my students in mind, I'd like to share it with the rest of the Classroom 2.0 community. Here's the link - http://digitalarts.ourtoolbar.com/…

my interests in web 2.0 and classroom 2.0

I am a sociologist who studies third party political movements in American society. Due to the lack of resources suffered by these organizations, they have been excluded from the venues of conventional mass communications. However, with the introduction of the Internet, third parties have found a medium that is widely accessible, and decentralized, because there are no editorial gate-keeping devices preventing the publication of contents within the limitless spaces of virtualism, I am… Continue

What's so good about Web 2.0?

Last Tuesday, we learned about Web 2.0 Technology. It has greatly helped all of us to be able to enjoy the Internet and also be able to connect with other users- even if you have never met them before! In class, Mr. Eveland showed us an old game, Oregon Trail, and then played it on the Internet. Using an educational yet fun fames in which students can learn and have fun at the same… Continue
