Quick Formative Assessment of Student Writing

Since reading Bill Ferriter's post on whether or not true formative assessment is possible, I've been wondering how I could make my own formative assessments more efficient. This post features a screencast of me looking at student work for the purposes of formative assessment.

Formative assessment is continuous assessment. In the context…

A Three-Dimensional Model for Understanding Student Disruptive Behavior in the Classroom; Part One: The Group and Community Building Dimension

Dimension One: The Group and Community Building Approach to Understanding Student Disruptive Behavior*

Many of our public and private schools are under siege with our students and teachers fearing for their safety and security. It seems each day we learn about new acts of violence, vandalism, sexual harassment and drug dealing that are occurring within some of our public and private educational institutions. In response to this new form of domestic school terrorism, some of… Continue

Promoting School Community Feedback

My district is trying to make a big commitment to involve students, parents, teachers and administrators in the SpeakUp survey (http://www.speakup4schools.org/speakup2009). We are hoping that this opportunity to provide feedback yields information that we can sink our teeth into, and give us some consumer-based measure of where we need to go with technology. If you haven't looked into this survey, please do. If you've had experience with… Continue

Powerful Learning

Which is more powerful, a service or a community? This idea came up during the last ETT Community Meeting. A service was defined as a fully funded entity like your landline or your local hospital or even your community college. A community was defined more like a bunch of people who contribute to each other's learning. A community is an entity with which you can engage, and by engaging, learn.

The difference is both a but murky but at the same… Continue

Community Building for STEM Educators

How do you build community for educators spread across the big state of Texas? and do that with a technology staff of 2. The answer is of course web 2.0 apps that take care of the infrastructure maintenance and offer a simple way to support users. Unfortunately for us, it also means tying together multiple technologies which each have their own log in system. But at least many have that wonderful link "Forgot your password" to take care of that support issue.

The Ning… Continue

The Power of Community

For many, today is a joyous occasion, one that bring the promise of change and the hope of prosperity. I am thankful that my voice and my vote mattered and that it is still a freedom that I have, regardless of the turnout. I will support my president. Like no time in our history, has the power of the Internet, Web 2.0 and technology in general had an impact on bringing out the power of community. So many came out and so many voiced their support with such tools as… Continue

Information | Knowledge | Wisdom

The other day, my son had done something we didn't approve of and so we took his cell phone away and access to the computer. He loves technology for what it offers, both good and not so good: YouTube, social networks for kids or not (myspace) and research for school. Over the course of a summer break, he taught himself how to read music, play the guitar and follow along with these videos to learn certain songs - I must… Continue

A Web 2.0 Halloween

Last night America, went out for weekly Tuesday meeting and so I had the kids at home to myself. After giving the critters their baths and getting them into their pjs, we got into the Halloween spirit. With that, we pulled out all the gear from the attic and decided to create a haunted hallway. The kids love making tents with blankets and such so we… Continue

Who doesn't like 80's music? Okay, the song is a little cheesy, but take a look at this in 4 x YouTube HD!
