What’s it like to go to elementary school in China? I was able to witness a primary school. Like the high school, students wore uniforms and worked as a seamless member of a larger group. Again, the students were fully engaged and on task. Again, the teacher controlled the learning environment and used a projected PowerPoint to aid in her instruction. Like the high school, students waited for the bell to ring and the teacher to formally begin class. Students laid their heads on the desk and…

There was an article in the
Wichita Eagle this morning talking about the discussing the budget crunch their school district faces. They are anticipating that there will be programs that must be eliminated. Currently, technical education does not influence the individuals making these decisions. The Bush administration has been trying to eliminate funding to…

There simply is not enough information available on the synergies or detriments that online eLearning will have on our children psyche. Especially limited are issues of the children's "self-esteem" and self-confidence building using these eLearning educational systems. When the Online Think Tank recently brought this subject up at a small meeting many diverse opinions emerged.
Below are some of my…

Obama Links Ed Tech to Economic Growth reads the December 3, 2008

Those of us involved with education and technology have been chanting an ed-tech mantra for quite some time, having identifed it as the hook to engage and challenge 21st century students. The first school that we were able to tour was a high school. Students at the high school begin their day by reciting political readings to help them pass tests. After these readings, students register for school for the day and go to the playground for morning exercises. Students are required to exercise. During the school day, students have four classes that are 45 minutes long with a 10-minute break between each. Between second and third classes, they have a 20-minute break for a whole…

I was reading about the Washington DC social media and technology scene and ran across this cool search application called
Lumifi. It allows you to search and break down your subject, so you aren't restricted as much to the first 10. (check out the Global Warming demo) It allows you to "drill down" to more results in a very easy fashion. Also other academic research applications for teachers and students, although these are aimed more at the…

The
Maricopa Learning eXchange (MLX) is an electronic warehouse of ideas, examples, and resources (represented as "packages") that support student learning at the Maricopa Community Colleges.
The key to
MLX is it being a place for exchange of ideas. Anyone from anywhere can browse and search the warehouse. Each "package" is represented by a descriptive "packing slip" that…

I'd love to begin a movement that would culminate in the spring called the Book the Time Campaign: getting as many people as we can to read aloud to a child or many children. Then we could have one day, in March or April, that is the culmination of those efforts, with lots of celebration for the importance of reading aloud in a child's life. Would anyone be interested in joining in and figuring out how to make this happen? I love the idea of it being worldwide!!! I could ask my wonderful…

I just received an update from Clive over at Pixton about their very popular Pixton for Schools product. Due to the current economic climate and the limited budgets available to teachers, Pixton has decided to level out the cost to be $1 USD per student per month.
This discounted price makes Pixton for Schools equally accessible to classrooms, large or small. Remember that you can easily embed a Pixton comic into a wiki, blog or website. So why not grab your free PBwiki and use…

I need to have my head examined. I got so excited over the Web 2.0 tools we discussed in class and the few more that I stumbled on that I volunteered to conduct a one-hour workshop at my school in two weeks. We just had a week-long virtual school after the terrorist attack on Marriott hotel, and the teachers were wondering if there were other ways to make virtual school more interactive and interesting, especially for elementary students.
So I prepared a list, went through it with…

Last week I attended the Innovative Learning Conference (ILC) in San Jose, California. Despite what seemed like a very light turnout, it turned out to be a great conference experience. The educators attending ILC were engaging and it gave me a chance to meet up with some of my social networking pals in real life. I also had the opportunity to see some really good presentations.
Like most conferences there was an exhibition hall with lots of vendors touting their goods and services as…

At a primary school Manning, a small town 65 miles east of Columbia, South Carolina, second grade teachers Holly Garneau and Anna Lynne Gamble are convinced that segregating elementary-age boys and girls produces immediate academic improvement—in both genders.
Eager to capitalize on their past progress, the two created a teaching plan for the upcoming semester. The kids will be in a coed environment for homeroom, lunch, and recess, then divide up for four hours each day to learn…

To help me understand the complexity of our economic crisis, I decided to search for information from the past that might have contributed to the current set of events.
The Celestial Economic Sphere, DataViz for the Finance Biz, Truthiness, Behavioral Finance & Greed is the title of the post (long) that I wrote in response to the economic crisis.
As I dug up material for my post, it occurred to…
