The video posted on this page on 21st Century Learning suggests requirements that neither make all schools the same, nor require we drop everything we do. But it does suggest a framework for renewal. We need to:
Use a project/problem based curriculum and experiential learning

This post was originally an email that I sent to our faculty here at Salem High School. I thought that perhaps some of you might relate to it and benefit from it.
Here's another great song to consider sharing with your students (if the video doesn't load the first time try refreshing this page):
This song, Our Lives by The Calling, has an axcellent message for our young people. As I have recommended with songs before, try playing it for your students as a Do…
As spring break is approaching - or what's left of it after we make up snow days - I have been thinking back to last year's spring break. I have to admit that the 2 or 3 weeks leading up to spring break were not exactly my favorite. It is not uncommon for people to ask, “How can you be a high school administrator? Don’t you get tired of dealing with nothing… Continue

Almost all the students’ loves holidays and vacations. Asking me - why? Well, of course we get tired of projects, school papers and homeworks. Plus stressful pop quizzes and recitations as well as quarterly exams. That’s why how can we not love the spring breaks?
We aren't too far away from Spring Break for college kids, and then Memorial Day isn't too long after that. Then you got Fourth of July, and these are all popular times to go camping. (Don't forget Labor Day.) If you really… Continue

Hi all - this is my first post, and it's an important one. In my role as Youth Outreach Coordinator for United Nations World Food Programme, I have been inundated with request from students and educators asking how they can help the survivors of the earthquake in Haiti.
So - WFP has put together a campaign and donation page dedicated to students. The page can be found here:… Continue

There's been a lot of talk recently about 21st Century Skills. But most of this talk has been between folks who stand to make a lot of money off the use of tech on the one side and folks who are suspicious of -- if not fundamentally opposed to -- tech on the other. Like most discussions in education, the voice missing in the debate is that of the students themselves.
So, I asked students in one of my paperless high school Latin classes to tell me how things were going for them. I… Continue
To introduce our schools to various projects and competitions students can do using technology tools. Am going to enter the video comp with MIT. Any other suggestions?

I've discovered this information first hand when I first turned on text messaging on my kid's cell phones. My son, a freshman in high school, managed to rack up 3,500 text messages in one month, and that's having been grounded from his phone for two weeks that month. My daughter is much better, she still calls us, old timers, but chooses to text her friends in college.
Only 12% of students currently check email on their mobile, but eROI…
About 1.5 weeks ago I rolled out my class blog (Mr. Lane's Computer Applications/Web 2.0 Blog) as an interactive tool with my 8th grade Web 2.0 technology class (the first few weeks it served, more or less, as a Web 1.0 tool). After working through the layout of the blog, we read together a post, and then I asked them to submit a comment. Before they commented I spent some time discussing the importance of making sure the comment was free of spelling… Continue
I'm working on a curriculum project, Plugged-In to Nonfiction with my literacy mentor, Janet Allen, this week, so I was not able to go to San Antonio for NECC. However, I have been dipping in as often as possible and I was thrilled to listen in to Chris Lehmann's session this afternoon.
School is real life. Sometimes, if we're really being honest, it doesn't seem like it. When my first… Continue

I have a vision where students connect with their peers from around the world. Why? Because it's interesting. It's challenging to create global friendships, across cultures and across seas. And it's interesting to learn what other are studying. Even the very precise studies, like math, are not exact all over the world. Sometimes you need help figuring out a problem and someone from across the world, who studied it in a different way, will offer that different angle that opens your eyes. This is… Continue
