I attended the same session with Wes Fryer at the KSDE Conference and was also struck by that very same question. How do we teach kids to be their own filter? The more I have thought about it, the more I see that it has to be a life skill not a practice that exists only in the context of technology. Kids need to learn what is appropriate to watch, listen to, read, do, and say in every aspect of their lives. Choosing the appropriate materials to fill their brains and appropriate ways to spend their time is a skill that should have started in the home when they were babies. Parental influence speaks volumes when we see the choices that kids make as they get older. What the kids do when the parents aren't around is really the true test of the "filters" they have become. We need to continue to provide guidance and assistance in all areas of children's lives which we have a possibility to influence.
