Music Educator Andy Mackie Talks About Priviate Funding Program For Public High School

Last week at FiddleTunes, a music festival and workshop in Port Townsend, WA, music educator Andy Mackie talked about launching a new program in the fall at Chimacum High School that is funded by a priviate donor.

The Andy Mackie Foundation provides Free Instruments, Free Lessons and Scholarships to any child who wants to learn. He has helped more than 1000 children learn to play stringed instruments which he builds in his shop, taught more than 12,000 children to play harmonica and given over 75 scholarships to graduating seniors.

We were surprised by the extent of the celebrations when we first arrived, for such a small village. I love how the whole village participates in the festivals. This is our second winter here and we are grateful to be part of this community. This quote says it all:

you have focal and celebratory events throughout the year,
in which the large majority of people in that community participate.
That is because the only true basis of community
is not supposedly enlightened self-interest but actual shared experience.
