Effective Strategies for Managing Information Flow in a Social Media World

I've been setting up all kinds of filters in my Gmail account so that I can only spend a certain amount of time each day to be aware of and respond to social media communities I'm a part of--instead of the constant interruptions of messages. It's helped quite a bit, as checking all of the messages during a set time is much more efficient, although not nearly as "exciting" as the constant interruptions. :)

I've also been using Netvibes with Twitter in a way that I like, and I'm sure others have developed good strategies for handling the THOUSANDS of pieces of conversation that come our way every day/week/month.

We'd like to do a LIVE Saturday show on this topic, and hope this discussion can help to prepare us (and find guests to invite on the show!). Do you have some success strategies in this area? Some best practices you're willing to share with us below? Please do!

This is such a relevant, important topic because usually the first response I get from people I talk to about social networking is that it's all too overwhelming! I'm really hoping we'll get lots of responses on this topic--links to blog posts, tips, suggestions for effective tools--anything that is working for people. I'd like to hear more about how you use Netvibes with Twitter. My number one tool for managing Twitter is Tweetdeck. The ability to form groups including @ replies and direct messages, and also to save searches for specific people I'm following really helps me sort through everything flowing by (don't you hate that message "limit exceeded?" I also rely on FriendFeed, Pageflakes and my iGoogle homepage for keeping up with blog posts. Diigo is incredibly valuable for searching for tags on specific topics to find just the resources I need when I need them. I really couldn't live without Diigo and use it many times every single day! But I'm sure there are people on Classroom 2.0 that can contribute lots of tips on this topic. Please share!!! Think of the thousands of educators you will help!!
