This is really about Liability exposure for a school District. Schools must be up front with parents and students regarding what is acceptable in a school setting; if not when something goes wrong the district must have legal standing to say that they both informed and educated students and staff as to what is considered acceptable behavior.
We tie this to our standard AUP....Personal devices like cell phones are also covered on a per school basis in the student handbook.
We recently release the following policy and procedure....
District Board members, employees, students, contractors, vendors, and agents, of the District may use their personal computer or web-enabled device of any type to access the internet while they are on-site at any District facility, provided:
A. | Has been approved by the Principal or Designee
B. | The individual granted access complies, without exception, with the Acceptable Use Policy for appropriate use of the District's wireless access points.
C. | Access for connecting to the District's internet access point using a personal computer, will Use BPSSTUDENT WIRELESS ACCESS POINT.
The District recommends any and all users connecting to any of our network resources to keep their operating systems patched for the latest vulnerabilities and to always use an up to date antivirus protection application such as: Microsoft Security Essentials, McAfee, Symantec, AVG, Malwarebytes.org. or similar antivirus protection. Establishment, and subsequent enforcement, of District standards is intended to minimize the potential exposure to the District from damages, including, but not limited to, the loss of sensitive District data, illegal access to confidential data, damage to the District's intellectual property, damage to the District's public image, and damage to the District's critical internal systems, from unauthorized use.
If you are representing a commercial entity, please see the specific guidelines on your participation.
